I am having trouble figuring out why the tractor won't start every time. One time it starts with no problem the next time it will not turn over at all I recently put on a solid state cut-out switch
because the original went bad and it is a good battery I turn the keyed switch on and I do not even have lights but when I push the starter button nothing happens execpt the positive ground terminal on the 6 volt battery gets hot. does this mean the starter might be failing? any suggestions would be thankfully tried hope every-one had a good Christmas regards Jeff

Jeff..... ....it ain't yer new solid state cut-off relay. and it ain't yer starter motor. and it ain't yer headlights. and it ain't yer battery. and it ain't yer starter button.

You write..... "I push the starter button nothing happens execpt the positive ground terminal on the 6 volt battery gets hot"..... ..its yer durn battery clamp. Clean it (they make special battery terminal brush cleaners) and re-tighen tite.

Remember the 6 volt mantra: "keep'em clean, brite, and tite" and don't be fer usin enny of them thar wimpy battery cables. Use some 'arry chested 1/0 (thick as yer thumb) 6 volt cables..... ...respectfully, Dell

I don't quite get the part about "I do not even have lights but..." Let's set that aside for now.

If the ground terminal gets hot, it means you need to take off the ground strap, clean the battery post and connector clamp, inspect for cracks in the clamp, reassemble, and tighten the clamp. For extra credit, clean up the negative terminal as well.

Battery terminals should never get hot; all the heat loss should happen in the starter, or possibly in those undersized battery cables you might have purchased at Walmart; but never in the battery post.

While you do this, it is useful to repeat the Dell mantra, in a slow monotone, a few times: "keep them clean, bright, and tight".

If it will only turn the engine over intermittantly, it is either that key switch or the starter button (you'd be surprised at how often they fail), electrical connections are not clean and tight, or your starter solenoid is bad or your starter brushes are bad. Could even be a combination of problems.

The hot terminal implies a short. Are you sure that battery is good?
