Began installing my new Zane Thang on my 2N and discovered that the pin holding the lift arm is unwilling to be removed! Frozen/painted. Don't want to "whack" it too much. Tried liquid wrench to no avail. Any suggestions?

We're here in Massachusetts "paralyzed in our homes" waiting for the snow to arrive from Arkansas! The plow is mounted and I'm making my wife nuts "getting ready for the fun!

Thanks and Merry Christmas.

My first comment... use 6-point tools, not 12-point. I try to always buy 6-pointers (sockets, box wrenches, etc.). You're less likely to round the hex on any stubborn nut or bolt with a 6-point tool.

Second, you're less likely to break a bolt if you use an impact wrench (e.g., air powered) than a constantly-applied torque. That's just some advise given to us by an old engineering professor long ago. For some reason, a bolt is more likely to break using constant force. I'd expect the opposite... an impact wrench to be worse, but it's better to use the fast-repeating punch of an air-powered impact socket gun on a stubborn nut & bolt.

That's all I can advise.

I had the same problem with my 2N. I soaked it with PB Blaster, heat froma torch, 3# sledge hammer, it took a couple of days of spraying it and heating it, but it finally move, and i drove it out with a cheapo socket. Be patient, good luck, Tim

Sid,

I always use a Craftsman socket to drive with, Sears warrantees them and don't even care how you ruined it. It pays to always use a good grade of tool.

Good luck.

Mike

Just got finished dealing with the same problem on my 2N. (see archives from last week). there was no way that sucker was going to come out. I ended cutting it out from the knuckle with a hacksaw, taking the whole assembly to my local machine shop, and having him drill it out, because he couldn't press it out with his 30 ton press.
Good luck, Rick
