Installing a Sherman Combination Transmission on My 8N

I own a 1952 8N. It has been partially restored and in very good condition. I was throwing around the idea of finding and installing a Sherman step-up/step-down combination trans. My question is, does my Old Red Belly loose any value by drilling a hole in the trans case to install the Sherman Trans? Are there any draw backs to installing a Sherman Trans? Finally, is it possible to find and purchase one in good working order?
Happy Holidays,
Jim

Sherman Over/Under trans. is available but the prices may shock you. I have a "52" with one in it and I love it. Depends on what you are willing to pay for "love".
PS: Do not get stuck with a cable shift one, there are no cables available. Also you must get the short shaft that comes with it. Make sure the shaft has a helical gear cut. The same as your "52's" long shaft.

I would say the value would increase with the presence of a Sherman combo. If you choose to remove the Sherman before selling the tractor, then having an empty hole in the side might be a drawback. You could dress up a hole easy enough with an appropriate size black plastic or rubber plug. You would want to make your hole as clean and round as possible for that to work the best.

If you never sell or intend to sell the tractor, then the question of value is moot. Then the question becomes "which way is of most value to me, with Sherman or without?"

Just put Sherman O/U in my 1952 -8n, works good.It takes about 4 hours to install (with tractor already split),you need a few shims (instructions are in i&t book). Any mechanic can open up the O/U trans. before installing it, and replace bearings & seals as nec. I have 5 tractors with these trans., no problems to date. Hope this helps. BURT.

I am looking to install a Sherman unit in my 52 8N but am having a hard time finding one. Any idea where to get one and what should a person expect to pay for one>

Mike
