I just posted a question on the Ford board with a couple of pics. I got a disclaimer message telling me that by clicking the "Post Message" button I was taking full responsibility for the contents of the message including taking the rap for libel, slander or anything else.

Too bad a few boneheads have to cause Kim to protect herself for providing a great service to us all. You can't blame her, though.....

The thing I find the strangest about all this stuff is that someone thinks we need to be made aware that WE are responsible for our words. Isn't that automatically assumed anywhere free speech exists? Are there people out there who want to hold the owners of this fine website liable for things said by people whom they have no control over? (unfortunately, there are such people- mainly lawyers!)

And why the he11 do so many people today think that an offensive word -or expression of ones ideas that someone else may find offensive, such a terrible thing?

THAT is the price of free speech- someone may get offended- so what? There are a lot of people these days who would willingly give up free speech, just to avoid "offending" people.....the same people are giving up their other rights already (and taking ours away too!)under the guise of "security", and as Ben Franklin said, such people deserve niether freedom nor security - and they will have meither!

Richie,

"the same people are giving up their other rights already (and taking ours away too!)under the guise of "security", and as Ben Franklin said, such people deserve niether freedom nor security - and they will have meither! "

The people voted in one great lakes state (MN or Wisc. I believe) to allow the judges and attorneys to control the entire judicial process by rejecting the Fully Informed Jury inititive on the recent ballot. The measure was fought by huge infusions of $$$$$$$$ by the trial lawyers and judges associations and went down to defeat by a huge margin. So much for the "fair trial" system our founders envisioned. This country will be one of the worst tyrannies of the 21 century if our direction isn't altered soon.

N - joy.

I agree, Mountainman.

Everything that this country once stood for and the very things that made it great are vanishing right before our eyes! All the freedoms that so many forfeited their lives, families and fortunes for, have all been trampled- not by a foreign power or "terrorists", but by our own government, using our money, with the consent of most of our citizens! This is truly a tragedy unheard of in the history of the world!

Freedom OF religion has been exchanged for Freedom FROM religion! .....and for some reason, it is only the practice of Christianity that "offends" anybody! These same people who gripe about a person showing any trace of their Christian faith in a public venue, are the very same people who embrace any display of any other religion in the name of "diversity"! -It appears that it is just Christianity that they want to stamp out. My cousins daughter was suspended from elementary school for reading her Bible during recess! Yet in classroom instruction, they are taught all about the beliefs and practices of Buhdists and Hindus, and are even encouraged to participate in their customs. (Why my cousin lets his daughter attend one of these looney public schools is another matter!) Maybe if decent people wouldn't participate so readily in their schemes- and would "drop-out" and stop being pawns and cooperatives and financiers of this system..... .(but I think it's too late already to -the only thing we can do now is to seek freedom in our own lives))

Greetings And Happy Holidays To All,

Times have really changed and not so much for the better. You could have seen in coming like freight in the night. It is OK to burn "Old Glory" in the name of free speech; the minority can govern if prayers are said. Our money is not even safe now, with some wanting to remove "In God We Trust." Sad times they are upon us in this great nation.

Simple times would be great to return too. When a person’s handshake was as binding as a contract, a person’s word was as good as gold.... We still have much to be thankful for in this great nation of ours, and for that we should consider ourselves blessed. Happy Holidays to Each of You and please. Let's all help keep a great, informative site like this going. Thanks for all the help and advise I have received either directly or indirectly.

It tends to be a crazy world that we live it. Sometimes I think that one of the reasons that I like my N so much is that it represents a simpler time. A time when so many things didn't come with warning labels because people were expected to use them wisely.

Tyman,

What a shame you feel that way. I don't think any laws have changed nor would the disclaimer by Kim change your liability any.

Those with 9N/2N Fords will be the innocent victims, as is always the case when PC rules the day.

In the recent history of this board there have been many things said that, If they could be Erased, The person would do so Willingly. But just like Sen. Trent Lott's careless words, It cost him his job. Every word out of the mouth shall be judged.

May the words we speak be soft spoken, For someday we may have to eat them..

Merry Christmas

You know it's too bad it has to happen, and most of us have had some experience with this,I usually don't get into this kind of thing but a few weeks ago there was someone always cutting someone else down and never had enough courage to leave his email . Well I too fell in to the cracks after seeing this for the previous few days it tiring and I wrote a reply and for some reason it didn't post, maybe I accidently hit reset rather than post or maybe it was cancelled before it was posted, I don't know, but after a few minutes and it didn't post , I thought to myself , thank god it didn't post, I was ashamed of what I had tried to post, not that it was libalist, but it was degrading and my post would have made it worse, like I said earlier, I don't like to get into cutting someone down even if I think they do need it. Thanks Kim for setting the standards higher, we will be better for it.
Stan

Rusty said " .. our board is now politicaly correct & our buns are covered".

Hmmm, I'd say YT's buns are covered. I'd reckon, though, that ours are all still individually hanging out there in the event we pop off irresponsibly. It's unfortunate but it'll probably even spill over to the advice that's shared. Sooner or later, someone will probably think he got some bad advice and want to sue for damages. On many boards, you even see posters who, after sharing their opinion or giving advice, will put a tag line at the bottom saying something like "This worked for me but I'm not a certified (whatever), and your mileage may vary (YMMV)."

Sad, ain't it?? But, YMMV :-)

There was something on our local news 3 days ago. I came in on the tail end, didn't catch it all. Something about someone sueing a website/person that provided information that, in the end, caused some kind of injury.

Not surprising. An aviation "e-magazine" I subscribe to has a kind of forum on which some posters got pretty free & easy with their opinions on the ethics of a fairly prominent aviation attorney. Oops! Bad news for the posters *and* the e-zine.

It's pretty easy sometimes to get carried away on the keyboard, and forget that the whole world can read what's being said. And occasionally that can be damaging to someone. To say "My experience with that person/company hasn't been good" is one thing. To say "That person/company is a bunch of outright crooks & liars" is something else. So, a little reminder once in awhile that we need to be accountable for how we behave isn't too surprising. And, as someone else mentioned, it's usually just a handful that cause the grief. What YT's doing with their disclaimer seems to me to be just good business. Unfortunately, we live in a litigious world. ("Litigious world"? Fancy words for "lawsuit happy" .. saw it used somewhere & kinda liked it. :-))

Hey Mark,

The people to really thank are all the unscruplous lawyers who don't give a damn about the damage they do to the country by filing frivious law suits. A group are now suing MacDonald's, Burger King, etc. for their clients being so stupid as to eat at fast food joints to the degree that they weigh 400 lbs.

They're in effect saying a corp. is responsible for their clients being stupid. The beautiful thing about the jury system, 12 dolts might well sit there and agree with the tubbo's. You can't blame the stupid actions of a jury on the lawyers, they just give the jury the opportunity to be stupid.

I have no idea what the cure will be, maybe if people started taking responsibility for their own actions. You know, if you're stupid enough to pour hot coffee in your crotch, too bad. If you're stupid enough to use a rotary lawn mower for hedge clippers and lose your fingers, too bad. If you're stupid enough to over eat to the point you weigh 400 lbs, TOO DAMN BAD! Wake up America! We can't afford to underwrite stupidity.

One guy's opinion.

Mike

Products liability lawyers have a saying: You can't make anything fool proof because fools are so danged ingenious.

Sure you can put up warnings--read a ladder next time you are in the hardware store. "do not set ladder in front of a door without a window"

Might make one head case think again but equally likely to make some other head case try it to see what happens.

Your mileage may vary
