Would someone be kind enough to explain the difference between a live pto and the pto system on the 8N.Also,what are the benefits of each?

For information on live hydraulics for the N tractor and T model Fergusons see the link below.

I believe that it would be fairly easy to make a dog type coupling to go into the drive line of the N tractor so that the forward speed of the treactor could be interrupted so that a PTO implement could continue to turn long enough to clear a clog etc. Then the clutch could be disengsaged and the drive coupling reingaged.

There was just such a device sold as an aftermarket device that used a friction clutch affair to do it. I don't know how practicle the were. I don't know if they caused more trouble than they were worth.

I know that there was a device that was used from NAA on up that was a multiple disc hydraulic released clutch that was effective as long as it worked but that sometimes was not long engough to justify it's installation. I have repaired this live PTO device years ago. I imagine that it would be next to impossible to get parts for them now.

Greg, if you're an electrical kind of guy, consider that live PTO is like having power in parallel circuits, N type PTO is like having power in a series circuit. Hmmmm

Live PTO means it has it's own clutch and keeps running when you disengage the clutch driving the wheels. I don't know any disadvantages to it. The disadvantage to the 8N is that the PTO only runs when the clutch is engaged and since the hydraulic pump drives from the PTO shaft it also stops when the clutch is disengaged.

A live PTO operates independantly from the transmission. So, no matter if the clutch is in or not, the PTO operates independantly.

The N series, except for those with a very rare aftermarket device, don't have live PTO.

The live is prefered because it offers greater flexibility for use. Of greater use is live hydraulics, which would allow the raising and lowering of the three point hitch without letting out the clutch.

Greg, On the N series tractors, it is necessary to have the clutch engaged in order that the hydraulic pump (and the PTO) will turn. In newer models, the pump is driven directly by the engine and it is NOT necessary to have the clutch engaged in order to have hydraulics. This newer system is known as "live" hydraulics. Similarly, the "live" PTO does not require that the clutch be engaged in order to make the PTO shaft turn. Clear enough? DickTN
