What is the difference in "live pto" and pto?

Same question for Hydraulics.

to add to mike's answer, the N series does not have vive hydraulics or live PTO, since they do not operate separate from the transmission. Howsoever, Zane Sherman makes an add on pump that give the three point hitch live capabilities.

I have never driven an 8N, only a 600 series and NAA. When I push the clutch in on the NAA it stops the PTO, and the hydraulics continue to work. Is this different from the 8N?

Yeh, because the hydraulic pump is driven off the engine, before the clutch & transmission. It's either a piston pump or vane pump in the small housing at the top right side of the flywheel housing. If the engine on an NAA or later model is running, the pump is turning. On the 9/2/8N the PTO drive shaft runs though the center of a scotch-yoke pump, which means the pump only works when the PTO is working.

Yes, the NAA has live hydraulics. There was also a live PTO option (don't remember whether it was from Ford or a third party, maybe both), that disengaged only the differential drive when you pressed the clutch half-way down, and disengaged the PTO as well when you pressed the clutch all the way down. I believe there are not many of those around.

I just bought a 52 8n with the Sherman LIVE pto and the Sherman O/U.We are in the process of a complete restoration on it now.Derek is taking lots of pics of it and I'll be asking Ed or Tyler to post these pics in the near future.Machine shop is supposed to begin engine rebuild today after a complete cleaning and check. We have already checked and replaced worn parts in the rear end and hydraulics.Trannies are next. The tractor was painted solid blue.I have named it "ole blue" and regardless of the amount of money it takes to restore, it's a keeper. don

Sounds like a great tractor. I am really looking forward to seeing the pictures. Good name, just be sure that you don't leave any "little bitty" cell phones laying around near it.

That gives me an idea.....I had somehow forgotten about Zanes dog and the phone.Maybe I can install a phone in the bowels of the tractor and if it ever gets stolen, I can "haunt" the person who stole it by calling the phone and telling him what a rotten thief he is. don

Live PTO will operate regardless of the position of the clutch. Same with hydraulics.
