starter reluctant to turn over engine when putting the 12v process to jump start. The 6v will turn engine a bit after trickle charge but does not turn it well. When using 12v jump process the ends of jumpers will show plenty of heat. Is it possible my starter is dragging? What is my next move?

Wick,

When jumping a 6 volt tractor with a 12 volt battery, DON'T connect the jumper cables to the 6 volt battery! Connect 1 jumper cable to the tractor frame and then touch the starter contact with the other cable. It doesn't matter which cable you connect to the frame - the starter won't care.

I would say you have a weak battery and your starter needs attention. ( worn brushes ?? ) Dont know Im not there to check it out.

I have an 8n I bought with a 12 volt battery installed because the previous owner only had the 12 volt one laying around. I added a resistor in the coil circuit and that's all. The thing works perfect. I have to charge the battery once a month or sooner with a separate charger. Someday I'll buy a 6 volt battery.

If you connect a 12 volt battery to a 6 volt battery for a jump, you should have no problem. Be careful to make sure the polarity is correct and make the connection at the 12 volt battery away from the tractor last as it will not be under the hood of the tractor where gasses can lay idle as small sparks can ignite these gasses. You will have a spark when you connect and there will be heat as the 12 volt is pushing a lot of current into the 6 volt battery.

Sounds like you have a bad starter. I assume you are using 12V directly to the starter, not to the battery???

Juice is going somewhere if you are getting heat in the cable ends. If it's not turning the starter it's going to ground.

Next move? Pull the starter and see what it does on the bench. You just need to have faith that it will come out since it is going to take some maneuvering to get it clear of the fly wheel ring gear. As soon as you loosen the two through bolts slip it back enough to put nuts on the bolts to hold the starter together so it doesn't come apart in your hand since the through bolts are all that hold it together.
