This is probably something everyone here already knows, but since I'm new here and still looking for resources (parts primarily) I poke around just to see what different folks have got (and I'm basically a cheapskate). Found that my local auto parts store has a Tisco book and can get practically anything within 24 hours.

Needed a manifold (bought one). They had it for $53 and got it the next day. Was at the TSC yesterday and saw one on the shelf for $71. Gotta pay sales tax (which in TN is the highest in the nation) but then UPS doesn't get its cut.

Hmmm. Guess if ya gots to have it right now and can pony up the buckskins . . .?

Hi Les. You did good. I paid about $80 for an 8N manifold in the late 1970's. It is amazing how the price of parts for the N's have actually come down over the years. Rick H. GA.

there are a lot of parts dealers on the net to find the cheapest part but if you need it right now one thing i am learning is "convenience has a price" theres a cost for convenience and it applies to everything we do.

if we want to make houses out of mahogany then the big timber companies cut the rainforests down and burn the land and grow sugar cane then the soil is depleted and useless in 3 years and washes away into the rivers clogging up the rivers and ruining spawning grounds for fish that eventaully die. an area the size of a football field is being cleared of tropical rainforest in south america every 60 seconds and millions and millions of acres are lost now and the climate is changing because the rain and transpiration process has changed and the moisture that was locked up in the forest canopy is burned off and lost. so we have lost fish stock for people, native cultures are lost and indigenous peoples are killed from disease that white men brought in, the rain and weather pattern is changed and it accumulates every secon around the world. thats the price our kids will pay for convenience and mahagony. so if you need a manifold in 24 hurs then I would say you have to anty up to get it. my two cents worth. Dick

Do your homework a little better and you'll find that the statistics on the rainforest depletion are bogus. Geplin finally admited that he was lied to about the number of acres the Greenies were telling him were clear cut. I'm not saying trees aren't getting cut down, just not at such an alarming rate. Rest assured, this earth has recovered from more destructive things than humans. Heard of large meteorites? DON TX

One news show showed the rain forest from satellite images over a 10-year period and you could see the obvious depletion of the forest not counting all the smoke. Regardless of the farmers running around looking for better ground you would probably find out that American companies back the biggest cutters and poluters.

forget the house. We build luxury boats, large backyard decks, stereo cabints and high end office spaces with mahogany. Wall street board rooms, desks, offices, all from the rainforest.

Don't know about all luxury boats but most everything I see built here (Palmer Johnson, Carver) is Aluminum or 'glass, I've never seen a mahogany deck, rare to even see a cedar or redwood , mostly treated pine, most stereo cabinets I see are particle board and simulated woodgrain covering. I won't argue with the Wall street high end mahogany furniture etc. but most of the high end office here in the midwest is walnut, cherry, oak.

Do you beleive that we recently signed an agreement to Japan. For the next 100 years the USA will sell timber to Japan. Never mind that it costs the American tax payer more money to harvest the trees than Japan pays for the logs. Now that's charity. And we're leading the band.

I don't think too many folks build houses out of mahogany. Around here were use spruce, pine, fir, and plywood and OSB made from trees farmed for that purpose.

I live in Canada where you can't get mahogony. Can I use oak to make my manifold?

Well....I was just about to build a mahogony cab for my 2N. Guess that's out now. Also, yes you can use oak to build a manifold. A long time ago I built a wood stove. Problem is, I could only use it once..... ..

Spruce and fir dominate the west coast but the prairies are full of hardwood (elm, oak, ash). Of course the prairies have other deciduous softwoods (i.e poplar, birch) but their lack of importance in the lumber industry has relegated them to the status of shelterbelt and/or weed.

And one more thing, we supply most of the hardwood ash used in bats for the great American game.

isn't it a prerequisite that each family have a pair of ash snow shoes? ;0

Now here's the kicker: "there's nothing like a good piece of ash." Thats what my lumber dealer has posted above his cash register. Bob

A couple of thoughts, first don't bank on nature for your future. Second, think about all that "white" men as well as blacks, yellow, red have done in third world countries. Where do you think the large majority of charity, missionary work has originated from? The good ol' U.S of A.

PS: I live along the Mississippi and it is cleaner today than it was 20,30, even fourty years ago.

Response to O.K.?
The good ol U.S.A. is way down the list in giving for charity. Denmark was first in aiding third world countries development with about 10 times the money per citizen that the US gives. Norway, Sweden are very high up, ahead of the USA.
The USA is about 18th behind even Germany and Japan.
I will do a search and try to come up with the internet address where you can read the United Nations report.
We will not sign the Kyoto agreement, Will not sign the Landmine agreement to ban landmines.
I love the USA but please don't believe all you don't know about our charitable help for the rest of the world. Whether we should do a lot of these things is very subjective and subject to debate but we really aren't supporting the rest of the world.
Please don't start calling me names because I don't agree with you, I am just stating the facts. I will be posting the internet address of the report from the United Nations. Jim

Now what does aiding third world countries development entail. For all we know that is the trickery point, the definition, maybe we send more money but it's not called aiding third world countries development, that sounds like a political trickery of words. What is the actual amount sent to the countries from each of those countries?

No.
Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Japan, and about 10 other countries aren't interested in reporting distorted facts.
They could care less. They do it because they think it is either the right thing to do or because they are benefiting in some way I don't understand.
Sorry to burst your bubble!!!!

I think not. It's France's only ability to maintain credibility in this world. Let's face it, if there was no UN? who or what would France be? They would be steamrolled right over into oblivion. Now they have influence on wether we invade Iraq. Bob B

Now let me understand this, The US, Government is low on the list of charitable donations? What ever made My government think that it had any money to donate?? My government has no money, it generates no money, It cannot profit at selling ice cubes to the devil. That is MY money, you complain about, My tax dollars, The american people are some of the most charitable people on earth, however their charities suffer due to the confiscatory rate of taxation from it's government. I swear if my government takes one more of my dollars and sends it to some sniveling tree hugging 3rd world country that is doing very well by harvesting and selling trees, and then using the cleared land to grow drugs to sell to our kids, so that the government can take more taxes for farm aid to curtail the growing of poppies in south america,,,,,
While our seniors, our veterans, and our working class people go without, due to taxes,,,, I'll scream..
Let them cut their forests, and if they can trash a new field in 3 years,, then they really gotta be working at it. Wake up, who do you think we are that we can destroy the earth, it took god to make it, and we ain't god. As for charity, why don't you try to keep more of your income, so that you can direct it in the way you would like. If that does not suit you, have your employer deduct the absolute maximum allowed by law for taxes, after April 15, take your refund and support the charity of your choice.
Just don't keep telling me how I don't do enough because my government isn't sending my money to every looser country in the world. Ron

I did not mean to say that we should give a lot of money for charitable purposes.
I was simply responding to O....K....? when he stated that the good ol U.S.of A. was the most charitable nation.
The facts speak for themselves but at least get the facts right. Deceit does not do anyone any real lasting good, only makes some feel better temporarily. If you want to feel good then go ahead and say that we are ahead of the rest of the world in being charitable.
