You guys are awesome with the quick responses & opinions to my earlier question about whether to choose an 8N or a Jubilee/NAA. I was about ready to go with the Jubilee (partly 'cause of the extra power - actual like the 8N's looks better) when I started reading about how the NAA's are prone to rear case cracks & that has me kinda scared. Are the 8N's more bullit-proof? Will the 8N handle a 6' box scraper with rippers to work on my fairly hard clay (with a few rocks) road? I'm up in the Sierra Nevada Mt. foothills in California.
Thanks again.

On the 8n I got the oil pan had a crack right side front, [ I changed the pan for uncracked], that was there cause the tractor once had a front end loader. That's what the head man at Ncomplete told me . Seems the R and D department at ford didn't have exact knowldege of stress points with impliments like that. Like the man said also, its a 50 year old tractor. Of course,I didn't notice the crack under 50 years of dirt until days after getting home. Now I know to look for that one. Prentice

Even if the tranny or rear is cracked, it doesn't mean the end of the tractor's life. I recently took apart my NAA and found that the tranny had MAJOR cracks/holes in the case that had been welded back together.

The good news is that my family has owned (and used) the tractor for close to 30 years and we've never had a reason to notice. I can also vouch for some fairly abusive use on my part without any problems.

Steven:
Remember that the tractor is 50 years old.
If the case didn't crack in 50 years what are the chances it will crack in the next 50 years?
Jim

I'd look at buying this instead of either an 8N or a Jubilee.

Price is cheap right now, but the reserve isn't met.

Steven,
I've got 2 8N transmission cases with cracks and a rear/center housing that is broke.
As dick said it depends on how bad they were abused regardless of the model. I'd just check it out and make sure its not cracked.

Yes it is true some NAA's are prone to cracking but cracking is prone to ABUSE and stupidity and pushing the tractor beyond its limits. The rear end on a NAA is stronger than an 8N rear end. Put a backhoe on the rear end and you stress it out to weaken the metal and crack it over time. Do the usual plowing, grading, pulling, hogging and whatever and you are good to go. Dont swaet it, but if buying looking fro crack and welds. Also, see if you can flashlight look inside the housing and remove inspection plates or lift.
