I use my 1940 9n only in the winter for pushing snow. After sitting for the summer last year the left brake no longer worked. I was able to operate it thru last winter using only the right brake, it's only low speed operation. Now sitting for another summer the right brake does not work. The shaft seems siezed altho I can see that they are free in the bushings.
Help please!

00fxd..... ....I&T FO-4 manual readily available at most tractor parts emporiums, amazon.com, borders books, barns and noble, www.n-news.com (great archive of implement manuals), why even Ford/New Holland sells them, isn't that amazing? $29 cheap, gettcha 1 and readitt. The otherday, someone was claiming WalMart was selling it for $13.

To fix your sticky brake rods, yer gonna haffta pull yer brakes ennyways..... ...Dell

Yup - sounds like fluid leaked onto your shoes...

third party image

Here is the right brake assembly from my 2N. Notice the trail of fluid on the backing plate. Notice a portion of the brake shoe closest is missing. Notice how the remaining shoe is black and oily.

My brakes had been adjusted per FO-4 manual (if you don't have one, get one) and it seemed as though the brake pedal had bottomed out.

New shoes and a couple of "sure-seals" will do the trick. Your parts suplier should have the parts.

You may find the oil from the rear end has creeped
down the housing and onto your brake shoes. 9N's
are notorious for this and the only way to fix
it is to remove the shoes and clean them. The trouble is, it will happen again.

Your gonna have to take them big wheels off and take a look, be carefull if they have fluid in them they could weigh over 300 lbs. , I would say things are rusted real bad or break shoes are shot.

Thanks for the replies fella's. I had thought of oiled brakes but it seems that the brake rods rods themselves are stuck and not moving [rotating] at all.

Double "0",
I had what seems like the same problem with my '45 2N.... "someone" had adjusted the brake adjustment to the max and there was no travel. Back off the square lug and see if you can get any that way. (That wasn't supposed to sound dirty>>>)
