A few weeks ago I posted a question asking for opinions abot thread repairs while on the engine. Many people agreed with what I probably knew anyway that attempting to re-thread while still assembled was asking for trouble.

I discovered after looking at the plugs coming out that the ends of the threads were most damaged (kind of makes sense since they enter first and engagement travel is longest). After inspection of the plug hole I noticed that the deepest section of the threads were all rusty & plugged up. Local Auto Zone has a 14mm/18mm plug cleaner/thread chaser that isn't agressive enough to cut new threads so I gave it a try. Cleaned out all the crud and now I can get full torque on all plugs. 30wt oil on the tool was thick enough to keep all the gunk on the tool and kept it from falling in the cylinders.

I think this whole thing was caused by someone either using the incorrect plugs (short) or by years of not tightening them all the way down and that compounded the problem.

Sorry for the length here but it saved me a lot of work and possibly a new head. Tool is ~ $6.00

That's sounds like a handy tool to have in the tool box. Did you get from a NAPA store? I may try to pick one of these up.

Not NAPA but I'm sure they have it too. We have an Auto Zone chain store here. If you look for one you need the 14mm size for this job. I wasn't going to do anything as I was afraid to take the head off and find or create some other problem. I just stumbled on this tool and I figured for $6.00 I'd try it.
