Jubliee engine noise is driving me crazy

I have a '53 Jubliee with a piston type hydraulic pump. The engine has had a complete rebuild including cam and crankshaft gear replacement. The problem is that when the engine is running and the hyd pump is at an idle, there is a loud rattle in the engine near the timing cover. However, if the hyd pump is working to lift a implement, the noise goes away. I have removed the pump from the engine and the sound still exists, thus, elminating the pump as the source.
Please help me correct this problem before it drives me crazy.

Check the governor. I had the same noise on my NAA after a complete engine rebuild (complete except for the governor). Anyway once I put in one of the newer style governors my noise went away.

The hydraulic pump is definately not driven from the flywheel. It may appear to be because of it's proximinity to the flwheel but it is in fact driven by the cam shaft at the rear of the engine.

If it sounds like the timeing gear it probably is the timing gear making the noise.

You have two options, one is to leave it alone (If it ain't broke, don't fix it!) Or fix it. The timing cover can be removed without pulling the oil pan. It may be that the crank gear needed to have been replace too with the cam gear. If the crank gear has to be replaced the pan will have to come off too.

I have a 660 that has been making that same noise from the cam gears for the past three years and I have decided to just let it run it's course.

Al, The pump is driven from a gear that is bolted to the rear end of the camshaft. The front camshaft gear, driven by the front crankshaft gear is turned top to the right at one half crankshaft speed. (from the operators position) The camshaft transmits movement to the rear of the engine and the rear gear turns the pump top toward the engine. Any of this bring back any memories? :-)
Note: only Al and I will understand.

The pump is driven by the flywheel.
