12 volt conversion diode question

I went and bought a diode for the 12volt conversion. It is a 1 amp, 50 volt diode. (the size was based on the "articles" on this web site) I bought the diode because I could not get the bulb holder or the resistor at radio shack. Besides I thought that the diode would be the best choice anyhow. The thing is: this diode is tiny. It is about a 1/8" diameter, and a little longer. With wires of course to hook up. Did I get the right thing????? Is this thing going to burn up on the first start????

Fessman, The white band end is the cathode(cathode is normally the end marked) and goes to the Alt Side. The diode is installed forward biased, which means that you can't hurt it by installing it backwards (just won't excite Alt) I would use a 1N4003 but ppl have been using the 1N4001 without problems.

Hope this Helps

Phil,

That helps a lot. I have the 1N4001. Thanks.

Fessman..... ....electrically, I think 1 amp is a little light, 5 amp, 100 piv would have been my choice. Sometimes a larger physical size is eazier to mount than one of those dinky things. You want a POWER DIODE not a signal diode. 1N4001 falls to mind but I really don't have a favorite. Just pick something eazy to mount.

My biggest problems with using diodes is remembering how to install them, ya gotts a 50/50 chance of being wrong. Sometimes they have an electronic symbol printed on them an arrow pointing into a bar. Sometimes they have colored bands. Sometimes one of the bands is bigger/wider. Sometimes they have printed part number. Sometimes they have a bump, sometimes they have a hat..... ..gack..... ..sometimes I have to use a meter to figger out which way to install.

Lets hope your diode has the typical electronic symbol of arrow and bar. Arrow hooks to ignition switch and bar connects to alternator excite (P-1). The test is to turn on the ignition switch and see if you have +12 volts on both sides of the diode with respect to ground, then you're good to go..... ..... Dell

I believe 1N4001 is what he has (1 amp 50V). It should work ok. I agree with you though, I like to use a lot of overkill on something like this. I buy 2.5 Amp 1000v (piv) diodes bulk for about 7 cents each and use them for just about everything, except signal diodes (1n914..about 1 cent each bulk). Follow Dell's advice about hooking it up. If you are unsure about which direction to turn the diode, you might want to hook it up using jumper leads or just tying the wires together. Then, when you are sure which way it goes, do a permanent hook up.

David, Dell,

Thanks. I will put the white band toward the alternator #1 post.
