Put a new aftermarket manifold on my 8N last summer, and now it doesn't have the power it should(can't hardly pull my plow) Thought about taking manifold bac off and getting the die grinder out and doing a little port and polish job on it, but could it be as simple as a carb adjustment?

A couple of times over the years I have installed new manifolds and had the engine to balk at the new manifolds.

Upon close inspection I have found that there is a hole in the casting between the exhaust and the intake. This is not repairable and in most cases not visible unless you are very little and can go inside to look.

You can test for this condition by removing the manifold and plugging the intake where the carburetor bolts by making a gasket that covers the hole and installing the carburetor. Then turn the manifold over and pour the intake full of gasoline and watch to see if the level starts to fall and the gas come up in the exhaust or out the exhause. If it does then it has a hole between the intake and the exhaust internally and can't be fixed to my knowledge except with another manifold.

Curt..... ....you port an polish intake manifold for high RPM engines. The N-Engine is redlined at 2200 rpms by the governor. Does that sound like a screamer? Thanks, I needed a giggle tonight..... ...(grin) Dell

Put a header on it, put an auto air pump on it and attach it to the carb air intake. Then challange Dell to a race.

Did your power loss happen all of a sudden or was it gradual. Unless it is leaking around the gasket I don't think that porting and polishing the manifold will make a noticable difference. I would be inclined to look at the govenor (especially if you are plowing) and make sure it is working correctly to keep engine speed up. It could be as simple as loosening up the ends on the control rods (mine were just a little rusty but cleaning them up made a big difference).

Could be a simple fuel flow problem. Or an electrical problem. Doubt you would notice the port and polish job on the tractor. Don't know about it being a crazy idea. Never seen it mentioned on this board before. The idea of 50 year old tractors still running is kind of crazy.

I think the logical approach would be to check for leaks around the manifold. If there is a leak, that's probably the problem. If there isn't a leak, that could indicate that the carburetor is adjusted for the old manifold that did leak. Good Luck

Yes, port and polish is a crazy idea. Doing that will reduce your fuel/air mixture velocity at low rpm's which is all that this engine runs. You will loose the good mixing of the fuel air mixture and the fuel can begin to drop out of the mixture and you will loose power since it will just poor into the engine from the bottom of the manifold. It can only make it worse unless you plan on putting in a new camshaft and carburator to turn the engine towards the 5K RPM range.
