Help! I have 2 ford 9n's, both start missing after heavy mowing with a finish mower for about 45 minutes. Both run great until then. One has a machine shop rebuilt engine. I have replaced everything that has to do with the firing (wires, plugs, distributor cap, points, etc:
Still have same problem. One was running fine until two weeks ago, the other one has been doing this all along.
Checked the carburetor, replaced the bowl gasket, it had deteriorated, did not help.

Wayne..... ....this is classic "bad frontmount coil" problem. Replace it.

There are 2 run time ignition problems with frontmount N's that "cure" themselves overnite.
1st) runs for about 15 mins and quits, bad ignition switch
2nd) runs for about 60 mins and quits, overheated ignition coil that melts the insulated tar and shorts out some of the primary turns, thus reducing the strength of the sparkies.

By temporarily enriching the fuel mixture by slightly pulling the choke, you can keep it running a little bit longer because a rich mixture doesn't take a hot a sparkie to burn as does the correct fuel/air mixture..... ..... .Dell

Thanks for the input. I suspected the coil, but did not want to buy one until I got another opinion. Intermittent problems cans sure cause a lot of work and unnessary expense. I have two of these tractors and swapped parts including the carbs. Nothing helped, but both units had the same problem. I replaced everything but the coils.
Again thanks for the input.

Wayne, I always have fuel problems, clogging filters etc. The first indication is that I have to open the fuel valve (sediment Bowl) "all the way" or she spits and powers out.

I now just Shotgun the system.. remove the fuel line at the carb and slip a hose over it and drain the tank to a container. At the same time remove the Carb and "clean" .. by this time the tank is empty and I remove the complete sediment Bowl from the Tank and clean the the assembly (i don't have a screen in the tank) A Welders Tip Cleaner is the best tool for cleaning carb & valves.

Tip: If using a cork gasket to seal the Sediment bowl.. place it in varsol so it doesn't dry out and it can be reused

I have a hunch your ignition switches are going bad.

did you re torque the head bolts? I had the same problem a small amount of coolant would leak into the cylinder Ididn't figure it out untill i noticed a drop of antifreeze on the side of the block. changed head gasket , retorqued , problem solved.

I suspect fuel problems. I can pull the choke out just a little and it helps the missing, but also kills the power. Do not suspect head bolts, the engine has to be really hot to act up. When it acts up it will sometimes just quit. After cooling off it runs fine again.

As dell says "90% of all carboration problems are found in the ignition system", sounds like a coil problem to me.
