I just purchased a 1952 8N that runs great. When I was looking at the tractor the lift also seemed to work. However it had no weight on it. I stood on it and it lifted me just fine (maybe a bit slow). When I got home and put on a back blade to push some snow, it would only come up about 5" and real slow. It will come up faster after it warms up. The fluid looks good and full. Should I drain and replace? Note that when I shut the tractor down and the blade is up it will stay for days and not drop. Also I can personaly help lift the blade and it will go up and stay. Please Help!

Thanks,

Tracy

Tracy..... ...Pretty good bet, you've got water in your hydraulic fluid and it is freezing around the pump inlets.

I'd also take off the 6" inspection plate with the hydraulic dipstick and look up inside and see if you see any oil squirting anywhere. It's ok to run the tractor with the dipstick plate off for inspection purposes.

Ford/New Holland now recommends 5 gals of type M2C-134D hydro/tranny oil. 3 drains (start with differental plug first) and 1 fill up by the tranny shifter. Of course you can use the 60 yr old specification of 90wt gear oil (80wt in winter), if you can find it. I use 134D satisfactorily in my '52 8N.

Remember, the hydraulics are power up and gravity down. This is why you can lift the arms. Remember also, that the hydraulic pump is run by the PTO. If the PTO is not engaged, pump won't work. This also means that when you clutch, the PTO stops turning too and the hydraulics stop too..... ..Dell

You probabley have a build up of sludge in and around pump.
