2N lift cylinder service limit

While doing a teardown to replace broken pinion, I am re-doing the lift due to leakdown problem. Piston (3 ring) is REALLY scored up and cylinder is too. I have looked and can't find what service limits there are for the inner diameter tolerance for this cylinder. I have access to a machine shop and can get it bored and honed if need be and I wonder how far I can go to get it cleaned up and still be servicable? I know the other option is to just buy a new one but heck, anyone can do that.

While I'm at it, is the how-to video on pump rebuild worthwhile and will it tell me how to determine if things are still ok or is it a "just replace everything" type of thing?.

Discovered my 9N is really a 2N. The hyd. pump casting has a pattern date of 2/3/47 on it. Not sure if that would be a cast date or just the last time the pattern was revised. Also has the word SPECIAL cast raised in the area of the drain plug.

Thanks in advance.

Bob..... .....smart hydraulic lift rebuilders, bite the bullet, and get the improved NAA 3-point hydraulic piston with the rubber "O" ring. The O-ring is much more tollerant of cylinder inperfections than the 3-ring OEM piston is.

Most of the time, just a "hone" job is all that is needed to make the hydraulic cylinder serviceable.

My I&T FO-4 sez: "clearance of piston in ram cylinder should not exceed 0.0025". As for what the piston diameter is, you are on your own there..... .....Dell

Jet..... ..I don't know..... but I would guess the same N-Hydro-Piston specs (0.0025) would apply to the NAA-Hydro-Piston. (since they're interchangeable) If you just really gotta know, getcha yer own copy of the I&T FO-19 manual for NAA's and readitt..... ..Dell

Thanks for the response. I had planned on going the new piston/O-ring route 'cause I figured rings have end-gaps and sooner or later the oil has an escape route. I am concerned about the scoring in the cylinder tearing up the O-ring but maybe I'm just getting paranoid in my old age. Ever heard of someone getting one of these chrome plated and then final honed? Used to work as a machinist in a plant that made air driven tools and plating and honing was pretty standard. Probably trying to engineer a space shuttle part here.

Bob..... ...Plateing and Honeing, if'n you can find someone to do it for less than a replacement part. But if your scratches are as deep as you imply, you may not be able to plate that thick. I dunnno..... ....Dell

New cylinders run about $100. If you can get one bored and sleeved for less than that, it may be an option. I think I'd be looking for a boneyard part in decent shape. You can use the cylinder out of a Massey Ferguson 20, 30 or 35

I just wondered if anyone ever did this. Thanks again for the response.
