12v conversion?

I've got a 2n with a front mount distributor. It starts fairly easy the first time (when tractor is cold) but won't start if tractor is warm. Last winter I replaced the wiring and gave it a tune up (plugs, rotor, points) but didn't replace the coil. To fix the problem i've been told to convert to 12v but don't want to spend the money if I don't have to. Might this be a problem with the coil and be solved by replacement with a new 6v? Also, I plan on replacing the starter switch either way. Last question: can I jump the tractor with a 12v battery charger when I need to turn the engine over faster on REAL cold days here in MN without damaging anything?

Tyler, I find with my tractor that even when warm I have to give it a quick shot of choke.

Tyler..... ...frontmount ignition coils have an insulative tar that melts when hot and shorts out turns in the coil thus reducing the sparkies output and making it hard to restart when warm. There is no eazy check for a "bad" frontmount ignition coil except by replacement. I'd suggest you replace your 6 volt frontmount ignition coil.

NO!!! do not attempt to use a 12 volt charger to start your 6 volt 2N.

YES....you can use a 12 volt battery at the starter terminal (NOT BATTERY) to boost start in the cold. CAUTION: make certain your tranny is in neutral or you're gonna get runned over.

Please reconsider your friends well meaning advice to convert to 12 volts. Since there is no "standard" conversion technique, everyone does it differently. We constantly answer questions from the "electrically challenged" about 12 volt conversions that don't work right.

I am a 12 volt advocate for the right reasons. So far I have not found any reasons for my eazy starting 6 volt '52 8N, and I know how to do it right. Remember the 6 volt mantra "clean, bright, and tight"..... ...Dell

Whoever told you that, is incorrect. This problem manifested itselft at some point in the tractors life. Therefore, it must have started at one point with 6 volts when it was warm. What did people do who had this type of problem before 12 volts came along? Were they told that they would have to wait until 12 comes along one day to solve their problem? I am just trying to see the irrational logic behind their argument. There is not enough data here to make a diagnosis. It could be the coil, on the other hand it could be other problems that could cause this such as a defective ignition switch that increases in resistance when warm.. There is plenty of data in the archives on this subject. Do not use a 12 volt charger to jump your tractor unless it was designed for it.. These are the very large chargers capable of putting out a couple of hundred amperes. You can however use a 12 volt battery and hook it up directly to the starter momentarily. Ensure that the tractor is in neutral, so it will not run through your house unattended. (Or over your foot, cat or whatever)
Happy Motoring
