2N Hydraulics still not working

Awhile back I posted a message about changing the hydraulic fluid in my 2N and it stopped working. It was working great before. I've since pulled the pump out and cleaned it and the housing out real good with kerosene and a small firm paint brush in all the nooks and crannys. I looked the pump over and found nothing but small chipped edges on the control valve. It still seats good so I put it back in. I didn't take anything else apart on it. I reinstalled the pump and filled with MC2 134 and it still will not lift. I opened up the inspection plate with it running and felt with my fingers for a leaking relief valve but there is no fluid leaking out of it. I looked up at the ram cylinder and it doesn't show any fluid coming out of it. The pump appears to be churning fine so where is the fluid going and why isn't it working? Any help in what to do next would be appreciated. Thanks

mitch try pulling quadret handle off. then unbolt 4 bolts that hold to the side . and then take a look inside hole with light and mirror . your tab may be worn off like mine was nothing moved as you say . this tab is always rubbing the shaft on quadrat . not much oil gets to this . good luck

When you had the pump out, you probably should have at least replaced the 2 pump side gaskets. The reason that I ask is that as I recall from your earlier posts, you had replaced your hydraulic oil with #134. That oil is lighter than what the tractor maybe already had in it, and the lighter oil will leak past errant cracks and openings in the gaskets faster than the 80-90 wt. In your situation right now, you can't seem to find the problem and you seem to be looking for the one thing that is causing the problem. Maybe it's not just one thing. I can't recall if you had also pulled the lift cover last time, but if you did not, the gaskets on it as well as those on the ram cylinder could be leaking now with that lighter oil. You have a problem apparently that is difficult to diagnose which I think is going to require you to pull the lift cover and, if you don't see the problem right then, replace the gaskets and the ram cylinder rings. In short bring it back to standard. Then pull the pump again (boy, I hate to advise that) and replace the side gaskets and relief valve if you haven't already. When the side plates are off of the pump, you can check the pump pistons to see if they seem to be in good working order. Make sure that the chamber in the pump that goes thru the bottom of the pump housing and feeds the line to the lift cover is not clogged. When the lift cover and the pump is out, check to make sure that the line that carries the hydraulic oil from the pump to the lift cover is not plugged. Finally, and others on this Board may disagree, but this helped my lift and that is get rid of the #134 oil and go to the heavier 85-90 wt. api service grade 1. Shell Dentax has this spec. I'm sure that smarter mechanics on this Board will disagree with me in that I'm more or less advising a total rebuild of the system, but I'm not sure of any other plan that would be better. At least you will have eliminated a bunch of variables, and I think by rebuilding the system, you will find the problem if in fact it is just one problem. My $ .02

Thanks Tim, I'll replace the 134 first with the heavier 90 wt., If that doesn't work, I'll move on to replacing the relief valve since I have a new one of those lying around. If this doesn't work I'll move on to pulling the lift cover and pump and replace those gaskets. Thanks again.

Did you make sure that the pto engagement lever is in the slot to put it in gear is PTO turning. You could maybe have a blocked port somewhere.

PTO is turning smoothly. I thought about the blocked port. SOmeone suggested running the pump with kerosene in the housing to clean it out real good. I haven't tried it yet. It doesn't sound like it would hurt anything as long as I didn't drive it all over the country. Any thoughts on that?

Are you sure that the control valve T is connected right?

Have you tried pushing the control rods in toward the front of the tractor by hand while the tractor is running and the PTO in gear?

Did you check the spring that is connected between the front end of the ram cylinder to the control rods for good tension?

Never mind that last question. I know which spring you are talking about and it is connected OK. It pulls the controls rods in when the lever is up and I can't seem to push them in any further so I guess the spring has enough tension.

I just put the T control valve back together the way it came apart. Both rods are connected to it and I've tried pushing in on them to make sure they go all the way in while the PTO was spinning. No luck. No, I didn't check that spring in back of the ram cylinder. What am I looking for? Thanks Zane.
