I was wondering if the made replacement glass for the original gauges on the 8N Tractor? If they do how would you install them? I have a set that are real nice but the glass is scratched up! Mark H.

Link Mark try this site I only looked for a few minutes. They seem to have a product that would fill in the pits so the lens could be buffed out. I think advanced auto parts also carries some glass repair items. may be more cost effective plus keep it original??? sounds like you'd run more of a risk destroying the gage trying to remove the lens. good luck

Its not the glass that's a problem, it's the bezel. Getting the bezel off and back on again without it looking deformed is the hard part. I have an original amp guage that the gasket slipped down and I'm sure would leak water. I'd like to get it apart to replace the gasket but know how hard it is to get the bezel right. Even the speedometer shop wouldn't gaurantee they could keep the bezel perfect. They must put them on with a special machine at the factories.

N - joy.

Hey Mark...er, Willy N-
How about picking up a new one and taking out the lens and installing it in the old gauge? I have a new ammeter which got fried afer one day (don't ask, don't tell) if you want it. I'll go out to the barn right now and see if I can find it and if it comes apart...

I used a paint can opener to get my proofmeter bezel off. The flat edge bent up works great to pry off the bottom edge of the bezel. Then use a small piece of wood to push it back in place. Try a small bead of silicone to seal it. Take the old lens to a glass shop and they can cut a new one. Make sure the edge is sanded. It makes it less fragile. HTH

I slipped with my pressure washer when I was using some sand in it. Mark H.

Making the lens isn't difficult - but extracting the old one will generally cause you to think that the scratches weren't so bad.

There are chaps that will do this work; primarily they work with guages from antique automobiles. Fairly expensive, but not bad - if you want a "museum-piece".

Get a copy of Hemming's Motor News, or check their site. I believe they have their classified advertisements listed. If, not the local bookstore will have a copy of their publication.

If I had a copy I'd forward the pages, but the print is so small I doubt that it would scan - and I sold all of my antique vehicles and no longer subscribe.

Regards.

If you can get the old ones out to use as a pattern, I'll bet any good glass shop could cut you out some new ones. I have no idea what they'd charge for something like that.

I've never seen any. You might be able to buy some flashlight lenses(I used to see them in hardware stores) and grind the edges down to fit, or have a good glass shop cut you some.

go to the glass shop. Get them to use a core drill to cut out the piece and then grind it on their belt polisher to size. I've got an old belt polisher, its got water feed for coolant, for that kinda job works great, its just tedious. If you want to polish the piece go to a jewelers supply, they'll have the grit rouge you want. Sand probably did the same pits welding splatter does. In that case the value is sentimental only.
