Knew I should have knocked wood! An electrical problem

Last week I said my old 48 hadn't given me any trouble in 4 years and now she is. All of a sudden, it is starting problems. Here is what I know, can anybody make a suggestion?

The weather is hot.
The battery doesn't hold a charge; in a few days it'll be too weak to start or entirely dead.
If I hook battery to a charger, it'll go up to 6.48 volts and stay there even though the charger indicates that is only 3/4 charged.
If I check generator output while she's running, it is around 6.7 volts.
Once started, she'll run all day, even start and stop ok.
If I hook an ammeter up between the disconnected ground and the frame there is no current, but a voltmeter shows about 0.8 volts.

Any ideas? Battery gone...or something else?

thanks!

I'm betting on the battery too. But to prove it before you buy, when you stop the tractor remove one of the battery cables. Now if it goes down in a day or two it has to be the battery as nothing is hooked up to drain it.

Hi Tom A. Sounds like you need a new battery. Once you get it started your generator keeps it charged and the engine running. If you stop for a while it has enough charge to restart the engine. If you let it sit for a couple of days, it is discharged. You could either have a bad battery ( my guess) or something drawing current while the tractor is sitting for a few days, resulting in a dead battery. Good luck. Ron

I would say the battery is bad. Although there is a MA. draw on the battery if you are showing voltage. Set your meter to the MA. range.

Myself, I would be eyeballing that voltage regulator.
