I did a compression test on my 2N. I haven't tried to get it running yet..but did the test anyway...my results are..#1-60lbs..#2-57lbs..#3-54lbs...and #4-60lbs....I know these readings are low...but would that be because of the engine being cold at the time of the test?...This tractor hasn't been run in no telling how long so I put some MMO down the spark plugs holes before the second test this morning and there was no increase in #1,2,or 4...but #3 jumped 15lbs...Some feedback on these readings would be greatly appreciated..thanks in advance....Sorry for the long post...

Tom

An engine sitting that long will not give you a reliable indication of the condition of rings and valves. Put 1 tbspn MMO in each cylinder, pull valve covers off and liberally soak valves and lifters with MMO. Let sit for several days while HAND cranking (don't use the starter) engine for 2-3 revolutions once or twice a day.

While you are in there, check valve clearances and check operation of valves (i.e., going up and down FULLY) while you hand crank.

You've gotta get that MMO working first to free up stuck rings and valves.

THEN compression test.

Throw away your initial readings. They aren't valid.

Also, before you decide to try and fire her up for real, you'd better prime your oil pump.

Wayne and I did not recommend pulling the head at this point. It's waste of time unless you suspect broken rings, piston, or some other major problem.

The readings are low but may be due to conditions of sitting with no oil on the rings at all. When you put oil in the spark plug hole it is not on top of the piston and is more on top of the valves, so it may not have got over to the piston top on all the cylinders. It could run down the valve openings instead. I guess you could lay the tractor on its left side when putting the oil in!!!!! At least the readings are close together, you may not have too much of a problem, how does it run, that is more important.

I haven't really tried to get it running yet...it was non-running when I purchased it..I was wire brushing it and found a spot where the block had been welded ...right beside the water release valve...which was unknown to me when I purchased it....it was covered w/ years of dirt and gunk...Would you recommend pulling the head to inspect and to allow the MMO to maybe penetrate better?

I would try to get it running as is to see what I was up against. Pulling the head won't tell you much that you can't ascertain other ways and will likely start you on the road to a complete overhaul! I would go ahead and clean it up and check out the ignition for firing, clean the plugs, clean out the fuel sediment bowl, drain the tank and put in new gas, check oil and water levels and fire it up. Then see what you get, ie smoking, power, starting, etc. Then decide what to do next. The weld may not be a problem if it holds water. Someone just forgot to use antifreeze or to drain the block. Often they drain the radiator and forget about the block!
