A charitable organization I'm with has had a 1939 Ford 8N tractor donated to it. We hold an annual dinner auction, but this is a very small town. We don't know if putting this item up for bid at an auction that will be attended by only 320 people max will fetch what this tractor is worth. Could anyone give me an idea of what to ask for it or what its real value is?

It's stored indoors in one of this gentleman's (heated and finished) garages and he has given us both a Ford Operator's Manual and a Ford Shop Manual that go along with it.

Help! Does our organization have a real treasure or is this a fairly commonplace vehicle?

You have really touched some 'hot buttons' here!! But that's OK! Can you post a few more views of this tractor? Even if it's sealed bid, I'd really appreciate it!! Thanks, Lori. duey

I only took 3 photos yesterday, so here are the other two. Unfortunately I didn't get a shot of the right side since it was parked fairly close to the wall. Some have asked if it runs as good as it looks, and I'd guess yes. The keys were in it when I saw it, and he plans on continuing the tinkering up until the auction.

I got some more information from the guy who was supposed to go check out the serial numbers, but I don't know if it makes sense. Maybe the print was too small for him to see?

This is what he wrote down for me:

The distributor is on the engine front, not the side.
The casting number on the rear end is 9N733B
The serial number says G or C (again, he couldn't tell) 159 8N.

Can anyone tell what the heck this could mean? The serial number is supposed to start with an N, not a C or G, isn't it?

Anyhow, here are the other pictures. If anyone seriously wants to put a sealed bid in just let me know. I could possibly mail you a bid sheet that could be mailed back before the auction date. The night of the auction all the bidding closes at 10 pm for the sealed bids and then they're opened and a winner is determined.

the tractor does not have "I" beam style radius rods. nice piece of advertising! economy wise it is a poor time to sell anything, unless you have some real estate to unload.

Well, it was decided at our meeting to put this tractor up as a sealed bid item. If we can't get whatever minimum bid we decide on we may go the Ebay route. Holding a raffle was a good idea, but we're already peddling raffle tickets for our Grand Raffle (win a 2003 Harley Softail Classic and a 2002 Chevy S-10 Crewcab both) and we don't have the energy to organize another one.

I delegated the task of getting the serial number and additional information to another committee member but I'll let you know what we find out.

To those near enough to consider a road trip: the event is Sept 28, but it costs $125 to get into the formal dinner/auction/dance. It's a nice evening...especially considering that it takes place in Cheboygan! However, on Friday, Sept 27, there is a FREE preview evening where anyone can come view all of the auction items and can place sealed bids. We serve FREE fancy-schmancy hors d'oeuvres and FREE wine and if you have nothing better to do DROP IN! It's at the K of C Hall in Cheboygan, from 7pm-10pm.

Thanks you guys, I'll post on a new thread when I do find out further information on the tractor.

Lori, first off it can't be a 1939 8n. 8n was made from 1947 to 1952. And as one guy said it looks like a 50's drive in tractor. However all painted up and in good shape, it should bring $2800 to $3500 tops. Yes where it's for charity you may get more. But generally $2800 will buy most 8n's. Good Luck John

Where can I buy tickets? That Harley may not keep up with my sons "Boss Hoss" V-8 bike but it's faster than my 8N.

A lot of speculation going on here. Try to read the serial number on the left side of the engine. Should start with (#N######".
Then have someone try to read the casting number on the rear end, that will give the casting date.
Also tell us if the distributor is on the engine front or side. As "bg" said the value could very quite a bit depending on the answers to these questions. It is easy for someone to state its' worth when they are not buying the tractor and do not know the facts. I wish your organization well! But too high of expectations on limited knowledge could be disapointing. This is not an "Original Restoration" from what I see in the picture.
Not trying to downplay the value or your hopes, just being honest about it.

Wow, this is a very active discussion board. I thank you all for all the help I'm getting. Our next step seems to be locating the serial number and finding out exactly what we have. I'm thinking the owner didn't get into specifics with me because I obviously know nothing about Ford engines or tractors in general.

I have to run out to another meeting and haven't had the chance to read through every response yet, but again, thanks so much for your help and opinions. We'll discuss tonight how we want to deal with this "gift" so I'll let you know what we decide.

BTW, the auction/dinner is in Cheboygan, MI. It's at the tip of the mitten (MI is shaped like a mitten) on the Lake Huron side of the state.

Lori, I lurk this board (where I've learned a lot ) and I also live in Alanson! If you want someone to come read the serial and casting numbers I could do it. A picture posted of the other side of the engine would tell these guys roughly what year it is, though. I bought my 1948 8n in Petoskey last Dec.with two implements in working, but ugly looking condition for $1800. I have seen three or four nice looking 8ns for sale since then hereabouts for 3500. Half of themsold, others did not.If the sale attendees are some of our "more upscale residents" I'm guessing 4 to 7 K for it.

Let us know what you are going to do. I've got a brother in Lansing and my dad is down by Niles.

With that big red cross painted on the front it looks like it might have been used in the crusades!

Also of note is the fergusson system badge on the front. The grill would apear to be from a 9N or 2N. However the Ford oval on the hood is wide, like an 8N. Everything else looks like an 8N from 1948 to 1950. The chrome accents are interesting.

If someone were to come up to me and try to sell me a raffle ticket for $20.00 for the tractor, I would buy one.

By the way, I bought a marginal 2N for 2600 dollars two years ago.

You have what appears to be a 50-52 8N. Quite frankly one of the nicest I have seen in a while. This one I'm sure has not seen field work for a few years. The hood colors, while not original, are a nice touch. A number of items are chrome plated (front bumper, headlights, radiator cap, oil filter canister, etc. A nice touch for a show tractor. It also has the Ferguson System badge on the front grill which is not at all original to an 8N and somewhat out of place. Only the serial number from the engine will tell you if it is truely a complete 8N. I would not hesitate to say that for show purposes it would fetch around $4000-$5000 (remember-it is not a true restoration since many things are not correct).

...I think it's a little misleading for you guys to tell Lori that this tractor should bring $4000-5000 or $5000-6000. In the right circumstances, it may...say, if there is a wealthy bidder who wants to help this charity and isn't concerned with how much it costs.

But in reality, it's just another 8N with a 2N grille and a "custom" paint and chrome job. It shouldn't bring any more than any other 8N which right now is around $3200 tops, because you can buy other 8ns(not quite as nice)for $1000-2300.

Now, if y'all think this tractor is worth $5000-6000, send her a check.

I'm wondering why anybody would ever pay more for any 8N than you would have to pay for an NAA or better. You can buy Ford 5000's for $6000. 8N's in eastern NC don't sell for any $5000-6000, I don't care what kind of shape they're in or how much chrome and new paint they have.Send me a big bag of money and I'll buy a bunch of 8N's for less than $3200 each. My point was don't get the girl's expectations up, thinking she's hit the mother lode and then have her disappointed.

If I were in the market for another tractor (I'm not) and if I wanted a really classy tractor like this one, I would have no problem paying 4-5K for it. Of course, if everything is all cosmetic and the mechanicals are junk that would be a different story. But we have to assume that the mechanicals are in a condition reflective of the overall appearance of the unit, which is quite nice.

...you're not in the market, it's irrelevent. What is relevent is that this is not a trophy tractor. It's a tractor someone has inflicted a 50's drive-in look on, and that doesn't add value. Value is value and chrome and a "custom" paint job ain't worth $2500 extra. If this was the first or last 8N made, it may be worth more than any other 8N.
The only thing that will redeem this is that the auction is for charity and someone may feel generous. Lori would be better off to sell raffle tickets as suggested. The Ruritan Club in Gray Tennessee sold tickets on a 51 that was done right. They sold more tickets and made more money than they would have at auction.

If it's REALLY worth $6000, put yer money where yer mouth is. ;^)

Sorry to press your hot button, but she asked for opinions, I gave it, and I will continue to stand by it. If you don't like it, tough. And if you carefully reread the posts, I never said it was worth 6K, I said 4-5K which in this market might put it $500-$1500 over an average 8N, not $2500.

There are people who will pay that kind of price even with some "improvizations" as this tractor has. Check out Bill's Tractor page (this site won't let me put in a link to the page). just type in "bills tractor" as word search.

I've seen these and a host of other quick and cr@ppy restorations and the guy is selling them right out of his lot all the time. Crazy if you ask me, but people will pay high $ for pretty tractors.

This is not a 39 as 8N's were started in late 47 and darly 48 on. this could be a 49? The serial number is on the engine above the starter by the oil filter. get that and you/we can determine the year.
Just from the looks of this, it is for show. If it runs and the hydrolics are good (considering the exterior), the interior is probably the same. This should bring $5 to $6K easily.

First, there isn't such a thing as a 1939 8N. 8Ns were produced starting in 1948 (hence the "8"). 9Ns were first produced starting in 1939. 2Ns in 1942.

Looking at the picture of this beautiful tractor, it looks like an 8N because I can't see a break pedal on the left side.

HOWEVER, the engines on all Ns were interchangeable with older or newer tractors and your engine could have been replaced with a 9N engine. Only way to tell is to look at the serial number located behind the oil filter on the left side of your tractor and then go to Smth's 8N tractor page (or this or other sites) and look up the serial #.

A far as value, IF it's an "all 8N" tractor and if it's hydraulics and engine operate as well as the tractor looks in your photo, someone (not me) will pay $6000 or more if you market to a broad enough market and someone who has to have a "trailer queen" wants it.

I seriously doubt you will get top dollar at a local auction. If you still want to sell it at auction, please write to me at [email protected] and I might make the trip to bid. But my bid will stop far short of this tractor's highest possible value.

Lori, I'm sure you're going to get several messages concerning a "1939 8N" (it doesn't exist!). Anyway, a fellow by the name of John Smith has rebuilt several of these tractors for charities. He may have a good idea of what they fetch at charity functions. Here is a link to his website and a tractor he is currently rebuilding for a children's hospital in Illinois.
