Yesterday I began spreading gravel on my drive, and after several loads, I experienced a loud and sudden klatter noise from the engine. I immediately killed the engine, and tried to assess what it might be. Not seeing anything obvious, I restarted her and drove it a short distance off the drive. After further exmination, I attempted to restart her, and now it wont even turn over!!! Can anyone tell me where to start? I can't be without the help of my N for too long. I now have 15 yards of fresh gravel, and lots more mowing to do before snow plowing time gets here! Thanks!

One word: Carbon! I bet some carbon broke loose from the cylinder head and is now sandwiched between the head and piston. You should be able to rotate the engine backwards one revolution if this is the case. This requires taking the head off and cleaning out the carbon. Not a major job, but you should have a new head gasket available.

Had a tractor the other day with the same problem. Sounded like a connecting rod was out, but was just carbon.

...that your statement "I immediately killed the engine" may be more accurate than you'd like.
What a great winter project.

Let us know what you find.

Put the transmission in fourth gear and try to make the engine turn over by rocking it with the rear wheels. Use two people if possible.

If it won't turn over you may as well remove the starter and then try to move the flywheel with a big screw driver agains the ring gear teeth or a small pry bay etc. If it still won't turn or is very tight you may as well drag it into the shop and begin an autopsy on the body.

Sounds serious. I would be looking for a tractor to borrow to spread the gravel. When you say it will not turn over, do you mean that the engine will not turn at all? (Some people say it will not turn over when they really mean it will not crank up and run.) Check the usual...Battery charged, tranny in nuetral, switch ok, etc... If everything seems to be ok, what happens when you push the starter switch? Click? Sound like starter is trying to turn but cannot? Next, try to turn the engine manually (switch off) with something on the crankshaft nut. With the tranny in nuetral, you should be able to turn the engine, even without pulling the sparkplugs.

Without further information, my best guess based on your original post would be that a rod bearing has worn out and slipped on the crankshaft.

While I am certain your post makes perfect sense to you and contains all of the information a growing boy is normally known to need to tell you if your wrinkle valve is leaking it would help me to know:

1) Oil pressure before and after disaster?
2) Does "klatter noise" follow engine speed i.e. does the frequency of the noise increase with engine rpm?
3) Any sign of overheating like water pushing out of the radiator?
4) Does it do it with PTO engaged/disengaged and with clutch depressed or released?
5) Can you localize the sound-front or engine, back or differential?

From what you post I can tell you almost certainly that some moving part is interfering with some other moving or stationary part. To be more specific some more information is going to be required. Until you figure it out don't run the machine or it will likely get worse.

Your mileage may vary
