I have just started using my 9n to brush hog. It does a fine job but I need a Zane thing. I bought a ORC but they only had 1-3/8" I thought no problem I bought a sleeve. After about 8 hours of hog in I heard a pop and saw my shaft had come off. Problem was the sleeve twisted like a pretzel. My tractor shaft and the ORC are fine, I just had to dig out the pieces of the adaptor. Does this happen a lot? I could eventually change my shaft but that sounds expensive and I dont see how to take out the original. What do you all think?
Thanks,
Bill

Our local parts supply has two grades of sleeve. Ligher/cheaper one that used to last us about 12 hrs hogging time. Decided to buy heaver/higher priced sleeve and it has lasted over 10 years now and is still going strong (sure hope I didn't just jinx the thing). Price difference is around $10, but sure worth it.

Other alternative is to get an ORC that has the small female and large male.

If'in the original shaft ain't broke, why change it? Our '48/52 8N Funk is still doing fine! Depending on how much hogging time the N has on the original shaft, you may have a real treat when you try to remove a PTO shaft with a twist! Straight shafts are easy, but if they have had a rough life, they don't want to leave their happy home and have to be persuaded to come out.

Good luck and be careful out there.

Charles

My 9N still has the 1-1/8" shaft. I got the 1-1/8" to 1-3/8" ORC. No problems so far after about 20 hours of hoggin'. However, I do have a rather small 4 ft bush hog. Works well for clearing walking/riding trails in the tight spaces through the woods though.

Those d&mn adadpters can't even run a blender without breaking. Shaft change not expensive and not hard. Fix the real problem with a 1 3/8.

Your Ford I&T manual shows procedures for replacing shaft. Should take you an hour or two if you don't have frozen bolts/etc.

Change the shaft. If you are going to continue to bush hog much you will be glad you did. It's easy to do, either drain the hyd oil or park nose down in a ditch - then remove the four bolts surrounding the shaft and out it comes. The new shaft will have a new bearing and seal too.

Be safe and use the shaft guards it came with.

So how much does the 1-3/8 shaft kit cost?

Hi Bill, Ijust got one from Just 8N's it's about $110.00 plus shipping. Easy job to do. Kit comes with gasket. If you don't count the time to drain the fluid about a 15 min job.

Well I bought another sleeve ($8), if that strips out I will buy the kit. I did not see any other (heavier) type. I would want to update this shaft to 1-3/8 because of the compatability. Lucky for me my old shaft looks very good, no twist at all so maybe easy removal. For a 60 year old tractor it is amazing how good it's condition is.
Thanks,
Bill

The sleeve type adaptors are pretty much worthless if you are trying to run a 'hog'. The adaptor that fits over the small spline and the extension part of it goes to 1 3/8" will work. Don't think weeds binding up in the joint had anything to do with the breakage.

I also forgot weeds were high and had wrapped around the shaft and the PTO coupling. I cleaned them off once but it was clean when the sleeve broke. I did not have one of those long plastic guards over the shaft, that would have kept the weeds of and prevent binding, if that is what happened. Are these guards a must?

Is the PTO shaft guard actually missing or is it just rotating with the shaft?

If it's missing -- please replace it.

If it's just rotating with the shaft, chain it up like it should be...

Yes!!! If for no other reason then your own saftey the guards should be in place. A split second of not thinking or a simple mistake could cost you a arm/leg or worse your life. Please play safe out there.
