while i was in the process of pulling the starter from my '51 8n for clean up and restoration,i had to pull the case off the starter.while i was cleaning it i noticed a spring on the ground that i hadnt noticed before.does anyone know if there is a spring in the back end of the starter case where the shaft goes into the front of the case?

Hi Aaron. The only spring I know about on or near the drive end of the shaft towards the flywheel is the starter drive spring. It is possible that the pin that holds the drive on has come off or the drive itself has come apart. HTH. Rick GA.

If it's a small spring it's more than likely one of the retaining springs that hold one of the brushes in, (if I understand your question correctly). What's it shaped like? Got a picture?

no its not a retaining spring.those are all in place this is a regular spring about one inch long.the retaining springs are like coil springs.

I just went through the starter on my 52N and I don't recall any coil springs. Maybe someone else has some thoughts on this.
