I finally installed a thermostat in my 9N/2N yesterday. while I had the top hose off, I also installed a temperature gauge fitting in the side of the hose, between the head and the thermostat. It seems to me that when first starting up, the thermostat would not be able to sense when the water gets hot, since there is NO flow at first, and the thermostat is several inches away from the head. Therefore I drilled four 1/8" holes in the thermostat so a trickle of water will always be able to flow through the system. Comments?

How did you install the temp. sending unit in the hose ? I Have a gauge and the sending unit is to big to fit the 1/4 in. drain hole in the block. Am looking for a way to install. Thanks..

I had a big advantage here, as I had a special 3-pc. fitting from an old hose. I don't know if they are available anymore. The first piece looks like a normal temp. sender adapter with 3/4" pipe thread on the outside. There are two square steel plates about 1-1/2" square, curved to fit the hose, one for inside, one outside. The outside one has a clearance hole for the adapter, while the inner one is threaded. I cut a hole in the hose, smeared Permatex (the old black non-silicone stuff) on all mating surfaces, and pushed the adapter through the outer plate and the hose, and screwed it into the inner plate. The adapter has enough of a shoulder on it that it catches the outer plate and squeezes everything together. Then after the hose was back on the tractor, I installed the sending unit into the adapter.

Thanks for the info. I think that I will try to make one myself. Maybe practice on an old hose first.

Thanks... Mark B.

Lack of water flow over the thermostat wouldn't hinder it from working. You have to remember that heat rises, the thermostat will get all the warmth it needs to work. The holes are a really good idea, though, to bleed the air out of the cooling system. A thermostat is designed to work in water, not air. An engine can get really hot before a thermostat opens and burps the cooling system. I would have gone with one hole but you haven't hurt anything. One trick is to manually open the thermostat and prop it open with an asperin. The air bleeds out and the water eats the asperin letting the thermostat work normally.

Thanks for the information. No one has predicted trouble and it seems to work well so I guess I am ok. I am also enjoying having a temp. gauge.
