This is a "hearty perennial" as my former boss would say. You have a number of options: drilling the head, going through the block with proper adapters at the drain, making a tee out of copper plumbing fittings (which is what I have), and I have heard of simply wrapping the capillary tube for the sensor with teflon tape and sticking it in along side the hose at the head.

I like the upper radiator hose location (ahead of the thermostat) because it gives you a good reading and does not destroy anything. I think you use an inch and a quarter copper water tee. Sweat in a couple of short pieces of 1 1/4" pipe into the straight part of the tee to put inside the hose. On the side port of the tee bush it down to 1/2" and sweat in a 1/2" female pipe thread fitting. Most temp gauges come with adapters that will get you to the 1/2" fpt fitting.

Cut the upper radiator hose and take out about 1" leaving room for the thermostat on the radiator side. Clamp this contraption in, put in the sensor into the tee, mount the gauge and you are in business.

Disclaimer: I am operating from memory (and at my age that is not a good thing) that it is 1 1/4". Please pull radiator hose and verify this. Might be 1 1/2".

Now you can bush hog away and watch the temperature!!

I'm thinkin' you could put a tee in the block coolant drain plug if you only wanted coolant temp.

On the 8N there is a place on the head that a machine shop could drill and tap for a temp sender.
Don't have my Master Parts Book handy so I'm not sure if 2N head is identical.

Not on mine. Wish there was. There is away to put one in the rad hose. Check archives.
