Okay, new everything. New wiring harness - plugs -points - condenser - rotor - cap - plug wires - coil - ignition switch - blah - blah - blah. Oil in - no leaks - water in - no leaks - gas in - no leaks - very pleased. Test light showed power at the block - good. Test light showed power at the coil, (with key on) - good. Test light showed zilch at the distributor - not good. No spark at the sparkies - bummed-out. The coil was wired with the positive side going to the distrubutor as was according to advice from this board. Is this correct? I noticed that the coil was very hot to the touch. Any thoughts on this?

Greg

What no spark?? Greg pull the wire to the coil that goes to the dist and pull your center plug wire from the dist and put it close to the block (bare metal) 1/8 inch or so. Then take a wire from block ground and tap it on that conection you just removed from the coil. This will act like the dist and should make the coil spark some if it is good. If it sparks then your coil is good. Now hook your tester up to the stud sticking out from the side of the dist and to negitive on your battry if the points are closed it should light and when they are open the light should go out. The dist is just a means of grounding the coil and storing up a charge to spark the coil with. If that is OK then check to see if you got power to the other side of the coil when the key is on, if not follow that wire back and find out where it stopped going thru it. Go all the way back to the key switch if you have to. If you do not understand what I just said, E-Mail me. Mark H.

Since the tractor is Positive Ground it would seem that since the dist grounds the coil it should be pos+ to the dist. and Neg- to the Key switch. Mark H.

If the points are closed, there will be no voltage reading at the dist, it is going directly to ground then. I am thinking you have a side dist, is that right. If so, and you see voltage to coil, and points are doing their thing, and condenser not shorted, and coil is good, it has to fire.

Your dist is the ground for your coil.If your battery is pos ground then your coil is pos to the dist. neg ground battery, coil ground to dist.
