Lock on shreddar shaft 'busted' or broke off

Does anyone know why this may have happened?

I have a 8N 1952 Ford tractor and the 5 foot shreddar.

The shreddar was working fine. On the last
use, it was hooked up (correctly, I'm told) and it
worked for 1 1/2 hours and then it broke.

It broke where it locks into place onto the tractor. It no longer holds or stays connected
onto the tractor.

Anyway, can anyone can tell us what we may have done wrong?

I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Mary

If you are talking about the drive shaft that runs from the back of the tractor to the shredder and spins when your are mowing...

there is a spring-loaded pin near the end of the driveshaft that slips over the PTO shaft. This pin has to be pushed to the side when you put the shaft on the PTO. The spring returns the pin to the original position and this locks the drive shaft onto the PTO shaft. Sometimes this pin gets rusty or gets trash in it or the spring breaks or gets weak and won't return the pin to the locked position. Take the drive shaft off the PTO shaft and see if it moves or not. If not, tap it with a hammer and see if you can free it up. Use some oil on it. If the spring is not working, you can still lock it by moving the pin back manually after you put the drive shaft on. Test the connection by pulling hard on the drive shaft to make sure it's on there securely. GL, Don.

try squriting some oil over the lock inside and out and work the lock back and forth to help it loosen up.
