Hello,
As you are about to learn from this question, I am very new to the world of Tractors.

I will soon be buying either an 8N or 600 primarily to mow about 4 acres and do other light jobs. I found out that the 600 has both Live Hydraulics and Live PTO, while the 8N doesn't.

Can anyone please tell me what is meant by the terms "Live Hydraulics" and "Live PTO", and what the advantages are to having these things "Live"?

Thanks very much. Carl K

Hi Carl. If the general condition of the two tractors are about equal, then you want to jump all over that 660. It has several things that the 8N does not: (1) live hydraulics - this means that you do NOT have to engage the PTO to be able to lift something with your 3-point hitch. This is especially helpful when using a bush hog and a Post Hole Digger, because you won't have the blade/auger spinning when you lift the implement; (2) live PTO - this allows you to use your clutch to slow the tractor, but keep the PTO spinning. The clutch is two-stage, where you push halfway down to disengage the clutch from the engine (to slow the tractor down, for example), and push the clutch ALL the way down to stop the PTO from spinning. This makes operating some implements like mowers and balers MUCH more convenient for the operator; (3) 5-speed tranny compared to 4 for the 8N...more gear choices to match to the job at hand; (4) heavier tractor with more horsepower...can pull a 3-bottom plow in the right soil, where an 8N can only pull a 2-bottom plow in the right soil; (5) overhead valve engine....folks with no experience on flatheads may feel more at home with an OHV engine to maintain. If you ever want to hang a Front End Loader on it, a 660 would be a better choice of tractor than an 8N, and an 800 or Thousand Series even better.

Parts are readily available for either one.

Here's an ad for the 600 series that indentifies the features of the various models:

Carl..... ....I don't know if you could call the 8N PTO and hydraulics DEAD BUT the 8N's hydraulic pump is driven by the 8N's tranny PTO shaft. Every time you step on your 8N's clutch, guess what? the 8N's PTO stops turning. And guess what happens when the PTO stops turning? The hydraulic pump stops pumping. 8N owners learn to get along with this or else the buy a newer and modern tractor $$$$ with all the bells and whistles.

The live PTO and live hydaulics is the tractors manufacturers reponse to the farmers complaints, they figgured out different mechanical ways to drive the hydraulic pump direct from the engine. They found a different way to drive the PTO from the engine with out going thru the tranny. Sometimes they have a "2-stage" clutch pedal, sometimes they have seperate drive levers..... ....Dell
