Is there any other possible place to suspect a foul up on a rebuild to cause a 0-1psi oil pressure at 400rpms warm idle other than the bearings? I replaced both the mains and rods had probably no more than .002 clearance in any of those places . I'm using 30w valvoline. Dang it all! I've never noticed it until now because I've just recently been able to get the motor to idle that low. I don't feel like doing surgery right now to even find the problem. Oil pressure above 450 rpm seems pretty acceptable(600rpm @ about 20psi and climing to what seems normal the rest of the way up.
What are my recourses; 1)Don't worry,be happy 2)Leave the idle up to 500-600 3)Use 40w; it has been hot like a mutha lately 4)Put the tractor out by the road with a "FOR SALE, LIKE NEW" sign on it. 5)Take a tranquilizer and go watch tv..... ..
All reasonable oppinions considered. Btw what is on the tube tonight?

Your problem sounds exactly like mine a year ago.
I bought the tractor in that condition with the explanation that the pressure gauge hadn't worked since the 12V conversion (I didn't realize cognize this was nonscence for a year after I had the tractor). I was shown a bill for rebuild that had been done 18 months earlier.

Eventually I got suspicious of a slightly noisy engine on high revs. I replaced the gauge and found I really did haved zero oil pressure.
I tried all the tricks of priming the pump, rebulding the pump, etc until I proved to myself that there was something major wrong.

I took the engine apart and brought it to a machinist to rebuild. He discovered that an oil gallery plug had not been replaced during the rebuild.
Interesting thing was that the tractor was worked for over two years with no oil pressure but was still very functional. Compression was not that bad but not as good as a two year rebuild should have been. Not recommended to run this way but it is interesting none the less.

Regards,
John

If the drive gear of the oil pump had any play where the shaft goes through the bushing it is a waste of time to rebuild the pump, you need a new housing and gears because the gears wear into the housing, all are available from your New Holland dealer, you just need to know the gear width.

Thanks Scott,
The oilpump was re-rebuilt to perfection by me after the 'experts' at the New Holland dealer here in Fowlerville rebuilt it. Just to rag on them a bit , Their idea of rebuild was pressing the new gear in place with a knarlly(spelling?) jawed bench vice leaving raised marks all over it . And when the the cover bound up the gears they stuck a second gasket on top of my old one! (which by the way had a piece missing out of it and cranked it down. And it still bound up. When I asked why it turned so hard they said " well they will all do that until they are broken in". I've always been leary of people that 'done it fer a living fer 20 years' or 'Don't worry, these motors on the old N's are very forgiving'. On the other hand, I must of screwed something up if I cant get the pressure. A new gauge verified that. This motor should hold at least 10psi at 400rpm idle even in hot weather if its like new, shouldn't it?

Try a new oil gauge. Blow all oil lines out.
Idle above 600 rpm.
Rebuild oil pump.
