Dry/Wet compression readings for my 51 8n are:
1 - 65/75
2 - 58/65
3 - 70/80
4 - 70/70

Are the ring or valves the culprit, or both. However, it does not burn any oil (as of yet) no oil foiling on the plugs and after replacing and double-checking the points, plugs, wires, condensor, coil, rotor, cap and complete distributor it still runs with a noticably sputter.
We are taking the head off next week and we kinda want some recommendations from the experienced!!

Thanks in advance for your'alls input
Cliff

Cliff..... ..what Steve said..... .

I usually expect about a 10 psi increase wet over dry in a good engine, 20 psi is definately a well worn engine rings.

I'm assumeing that you cranked your engine for at least 5 pumps or maxed out your compression reading? Just 1 pump will definately give you a low reading.

Since you DO NOT COMPLAIN of the usual bad rings compaints of burning oil, smoking exhaust, fouled sparkies, just want to make certain you're making the right decision..... ...Dell

Cliff H:

Those are pretty low compression numbers. The increase in pressure "wet" indeed indicates worn rings, although your valves are undoubtedtly due for work too. With that low compression, it will be difficult to have a smooth running engine regardless of good ignition components.

The lack of smoke out the exhaust isn't necessarily an indicator of worn rings: blow-by is.

With a complete, proper overhaul (rings, valves, milled/non-warped head, etc), you should have 120 lbs or better.

Time for a complete overhaul. Parts are readily available on this and other sites. Also, a fun and wise investment is the overhaul video on this and other sites (about $28 I think). Really helps plan your overhaul and has some interesting time saving/mistake saving tips. And BOY will people want to borrow it from you!

Out of curiosity, what are the "optimum" engine compression result.
My manual says that 90 is the minumum recommended pressure. But what are the "new" or optimum copmression numbers.

specs call for 115 lbs at sea level at 120 rpm cranking speed with all plugs removed The value goes down at barometric pressure decreases at 60 degrees F.
