2N Rear Axel Trumpet Gaskets...still looking for assistance

I am still in need of some clarification regarding the trupmet gaskets for my 2N. When I removed the brake drums from the trumpets there was a gasket and a shim on the left and a gasket on the right. These are not shown in my parts manual. Any ideas on part numbers (not to be confused with the large paper gasket at the housing)?

Thank you in advance.

George..... ....my Ford Master Parts Catalog lists p/n 8N-4229-(D,E,F) Shim (rear axle bearing) AR, effective 9N,2N,8N,NAA....these are metal shims. There is also a paper gasket that can also be used a shim too.

Shims are used to adjust your axle bearing pre-load per I&T FO-4. Remember, bearing clearance too loose is better than too tight, but just right is bestest..... .....Dell

I have been trying to get some clarification on the same question for awhile. In addition to the gasket, I am wondering if there should be a seal on the small lip just inside the trumpet housing (also in the small end). When I disassembled mine, there was nothing on either side. I had no leak there, but I dont understand why the hydro fluid did not leak with just metal on metal. All this stuff is still new to me but there are gaskets everywhere else... And I agree with you, there is no reference to these in the I&T manual

Bill..... ...what version of I&T FO-4 do you have? I have a very clear picture (fig FO118) showing about 6 shims dangling on axle on a 2N illustration discussing endplay adjustment with shims. Some dealers don't stock the metal shims and all you get is a bunch of paper gaskets to use as shims. A lotta of old shims come out in pieces and everytime you change an axle bearing, you upset the axle endplay. Both 2N/8N use shims for adjustment. Remember, too loose is better than too tight but just right is bestest..... ..... Dell

Dell, well we're both right, FO118 clearly shows the shims, but I was looking at fig. 197 pg. 137 where they show nothing for the 9/2N. But on the very next page they show shims for the 8N, maybe an oversight by the editor. Now my question is, if I had no shims when I took it apart, will there be a need to put some in when re-assembled or will everything go back as it was? Will it require a gasket if no shims are in place? Also, what about the lack of a seal on that inside lip, I am thinking that the collar (9N4132) will sit on the edge of the lip, but does that form a seal good enough to hold the fluid? And a new question...I have no need to bust the axle off the brake assembly, but I do want to grease the bearings, should I just apply it as best from the inside of the cup as it sits in the assembly? Any tricks??
Thanks for the great help!!

Axle shims were being sold on Ebay not too long ago.

Bill..... .....who knows wheather you need a shim or not? That's why you need to go thru the adjusting procedure per I&T FO-4. My advice, get a handfull (50c cheap) so you can add and subtract as required to get the correct clearances.

You can get a "needle" greesgun attachment to squirt real tractor bearing greese into open end of bearing cage..... .....Dell

The shims arefor axel adjustment. Should say something about them in the Fo-4 manual.
