just installed 12v conversion. followed wiring diagram exactly, double checked wiring. when done, start button turned starter over just fine but no start. checked arc at plugs and no arc. then battery went dead after multiple start attempts. then hooked charger to battery while it was still connected. left key on while trying to start again. this time the resistor started smoking heavily. from this piont forward, i could not get the start switch to turn the starter. if i ground the wire at start switch, i get a loud slick out of the starter but no turn. i bought cheap multimeter and it registers 12v at all point in circuit (starter, alt, term block, both ends of resister, coil, etc.). i'm a novice at electrical. any ideas????

Can you turn engine by hand. Sounds like starter drive may be jammed on flywheel. If engine appears stuck - put in highest gear and rock until it comes loose or loosen starter to free it up. If this is not problem and you have 12 volts at the starter my next guess would be a bad starter. Take it off and have it tested. Get it to turn over, then go for getting spark.

thanks jack, i just noticed i have a 12v coil and also installed the resistor. i thought it was a 6 v coil since i had a original generator system. do i toss the resistor? the 12v conv kit came with the resistor assuming i had a 6v coil. what problems will this cause.

If you have a square, front mount 12 volt coil, you should have 7 to 10.5 volts at top of coil with points closed. Opinions vary as to the exact correct voltage but I would think it safer to er on the low side as long as you have plenty of spark. My 12 volt 8N has just over 7 volts at top of coil and has run fine for over a year.

N-joy.

There are different kits on the market. Mine came with another resistor and also a 12v coil. It was a Tisco. I can't remember the voltages you should have on a 12v coil with points closed but remember seeing it in the arcives somewhere. Having an extra resistor in series won't hurt anything if good spark is there. It is not having enough resistors that melts and smokes coils.
