Last year I purchased a "Free Floating finishing mower" so far I have had nothing but trouble with my King Kutter. I'm beginning to think that is was made in China. So far I have had to replace one blade spindle Assy. and two belts. I was told by the good folks at Ace Hardware that I need to keep her greased. Well I can tell you I have kept her greased. I have been gentle and very caring for my $900.00 plus purchase. I noticed today I have a couple welding spots that are cracking. Is this typical of finishing mowers? this is the first one I have ever had. I know I will probably catch some flak here. But honestly I have had some bad luck with it. Next time I'll buy me a woods. Sorry I just need to vent my anger.

I have had a King Kutter 5 ft mower for 10 or 11 years now. I have replaced the belts twice and the spindle units 7 times between the three units. If I would have had the money I would have bought a Woods. I am to the point now I just replace the bearings inside the spindle unit instead of the entire unit. I will have to sandblast it after this season and repaint it. In Louisiana I use it from May until October 2 or three times a month depending on rain on about 1 and half acres

A friend at work was telling me he had trouble with his king cutter. I have a massey ferguson cutter. Used when I bought it. Been cutting my yard all year no problem. Also been dragging it down the road about a mile and cuttin the mother-in laws yard. Not to mention all the stuff it has been slammed into. Solid as a rock.

I posted an answer earlier, but it never showed on the board. I had a King Kutter like that and it was nothing but trouble. It broke the spindle housing at least twice, which makes the blades tip and cut crooked. It wallered out roller bushings at least twice, which also makes an uneven cut. I had belt problems. In short, I sold it cheap enough to embarass me and was glad to see it leave the place. Bought a Woods RD6000 new, and have never had a problem or regret.

Terry, how do you tell if your spindle is going bad? I have a KK 5' finish mower that leaves a 1 inch trail of grass between my blades when I make turns or cut tall (5-6inches) or very thick grass. My mower is going on 4th year cutting but the problem started last year. I contacted KK, spoke several people who said they never heard of this nor knew what was causing the problem.

The only time my FM-72 does this is:

  1. the blades need sharpening

  2. the grass is a foot tall

  3. the grass is wet

I'd check number 1 first although 6 inches might be tall enough to start skipping -- as the grass gets taller, it develops stems that are harder to cut than the leaves. The areas that are near the end of the blades are where skipping tends to show up first (in the middle of the blade, it gets more chances to cut it off).

Has anybody had any experience with an Arts-Way finishing mower? I found a used one (looks like new) for $1200. He said it was 1750 new.

I think reading all the input here I would try contacting king kutter and tell them what has happened they may try to make it up to you somehow if you tell them that you are thinking of getting rid of it for a woods. just a thought

Had a KK 5' finish mower for about 5 years. Worked good. Never lost a spindle. Only problem was some small cracks on the skirt of the deck. Finally sold it because I planted too many trees to mow around with the Ford and the pull mower. Got a smaller garden tractor, but never really had problems with the KK.

My 6 foot King Kutter has worked great for three seasons. I wish it was a rear discharge, but I haven't replaced a thing....not a belt, wheel or anything....yes I grease it a fair amount, and once I did actually scalp a rock so bad I bent the deck a little....I beat it back with a sledge, and she was back to cutting even. In my opinion it is a heck of a machine. I think you bought a lemon, or your "waggle" has it wacking fence posts and foundations too much....

Good Luck
Steve

Yep I think I bought a lemon, but that can be true with any purchase. If my pockets were deeper I would have bought a Woods to begin with. They are a bit pricey but well worth the extra cash. In the meantime I'll continue to nurse my KK. Thanks for the input.

$900 TO $949 for a finishing mower?! There's your problem. I have a 48" Farm King that is made here in Canada. It sells for about $2500CDN ($1600US). I have used it non-stop for 5 years now and NEVER had to do a thing to it. Heck, I'm running the original belts. I look after it, but when it's time to work I use it hard.

Yea, a Canadian Mower is fine if you want your grass cut to a metric height....take off, eh?

I am on my second summer with a KK FM-60 finish mower. It is a good cutter and hard worker, in my opinion. I have had to replace one belt which was kind of my fault since I didn't clean the grass clippings out of the housing. I also have had two flats, but once again it is my fault since I got the flats transporting it wheels down to my brother's house. King Kutter's are also notorious for weak paint. My FM has some rust at its scratches, but good news is touch up paint is available from your dealer.

You also mention that your KK mower cost $900 (my FM-60 ran me $949). Have you priced a new woods mower lately?

I have used my 6' King Kutter finish mower here in sandy FL soil cutting Argentine Bahia Grass since May of 1995. I have only replaced the belt twice, replaced blades annually, repaired the dolly spindle collars, replaced an idler pulley, rebushed the wheels, and fixed flats on occasion. It is greased each use. It has no cracks, some surface rust from salt air and performs as well as any other I have had. Not bad for a mower used 10 mths a year! I highly rercommend KK Finish Mowers to anyone! Also customer service is responsive when you need help!

I have no experience with the Finish Mowers, but I have had no trouble whatsoever with my KK Rotary Cutter (Brush-Hog).
This will be the third summer with it, and so far I have not even had to add gear oil.
All the welds are holding and I have seriously overworked it IMHO. I already have 30 plus hours on this year and would have more if I did not have a flat...
