Hi,

Just got the 12v conversion kit from Alpha Tractor Services. Looks good. This kit includes a 12v coil *and* a resistor. Why is the resistor included? I thought it was needed only if one retained the original 6v coil.

Thanks,
Brian

PS I will post results when the conversion is installed. I apologize to any offended 6v fans but constant ruination of 6v batteries was frustrating and I opted to (hopefully) get longer battery life/easier starting and eliminate whatever was draining/wrecking 6v batteries.

I took Dell's good advise a while back and bought a coil from Advance Auto that even said on the side "No External Resistors Required". The part number was GC124, manufactured by Sorenson. I am now happy and resistor free.

Is that a front mount or side mount coil. Either way good to know.

Jim; The resistor is needed even with the 12V coil so that you dont fry the points and condenser- which, after all, were made for a 6V system. I needed to replace the 12V coil that came with my tractor, and I bought one with built-in resistence of the appropriate value- thereby eliminating the need for a resistor- but the darn coil cost $45- but it works great!

Most 12V coils still require a resistor -- it's just a different style and value than the original one on the OEM 6V system.

If you don't use the resistor, your coil will likely overheat and eventually fail.
