a few days ago as i was coming acrost the pasture, my 8N (1951) started missing and tried to die a few times. it ran so rough i didn't think i would make it to the house. i figured it must have been the fuel filter trying to stop up. new filter didn't help. so, ok, it hadn't een tuned up in 5 yrs so i put new plugs, points, wires, cap, etc. no change. rebuilt the carb, and replaced the manifold while i was at it. no improvement. kinda stumped here. it's getting plenty of fuel. timing is right. don't know.....at idle it will drop random shots and sound sorta "feathery", increase the speed and it will surge and miss and try to die. i was thinking that maybe the carb kit didn't work. and btw, why does a rebuilt cost only 5.00 less than new? also noticed that the firin order in my IT manual says 1-2-4-3, but mine has always been 1-3-4-2. looks like it was wired wrong it would't have run perfectly for years.....anyway, do you think i should just go ahead and buy a new carb, r look elsewhere? (btw, the governor seems to be fine also.) also, if i screw out the idle screw all the way the tractor will die, but if i screw it all the way in, it does't affect it.

I don't want to disagree with these guys but the discription of your problem sounds very close to the problems I was having. It was the carb. Mine was rebuilt by a "Tractor Mechanic" and so it took me forever to find the problem (as I kept thinking, "it can't be the carb"). I first ran some fine wire through every hole in that sucker and low and behold after I put it back together the tractor ran better than it has since I've owned it. I also had a similar problem with the idle screw. Now it works fine. BTW, does it run better if you play around with the choke. That would be a sure sign to me it is carb problems.

how silly of me....please disregard the part about the firing order. i was counting backwards. 1-3-4-2 is just 1-2-4-3 backwards. forgot which way the rotor was turning....sorry....rest of post is relevant though...

.oot cixelsyd m'I (BG)

Symptoms still sound ignition related.

Did you also replace rotor, coil, and condensor? Also, there is a little copper grounding strap in the dist that can go bad over time. Check it for corrosion.

If this doesn't fix, check all 3 fuel screens (carb bowl, gas tank, carb elbow for blockage.

I had same sypmtoms and discovered (after trying everything) that my rotor had a hairline crack next to the brass. Found that by sheer accident.
