2N Rear Axle Seal Replacement Questions

I have a '46 2N. The rear axles have been removed and cleaned thoroughly. I had ordered replacement seals from FNH and now realize I would have to remove the bearings to replace the seals.

Is replacing the seals with the original design the way to go or should I obtain Sure-Seals? If I use the Sure-Seals, would the grease not leak out into the brakes through the bad outer seal?

If I do replace the outer seal, I assume I need to have the FNH dealer press the bearing reatiner off/on?

Would the "best" fix be to replace the original outer seal, grease the bearings, and install Sure-Seals on the inside?

All advice appreciated.

I also have a 46 2N. I used the Sure-Seals and Zane's "fix". Have not seen a drop of fluid since.

Good Luck

When I went to re-do my brakes, I read about Zane's silicone squeeze fix and wondered if it would be eashy to remove the axle once the silicone set.

Have you tried to remove the axle since you installed the Zane seal?

No need, ain't no leak!!!! (Hee Hee).
Seriously though, if ever the axles had to be taken out I don't expect a problem. The silicone won't stick to the teflon and although it's probably stuck to the housing it still should come on out.

I redid my 46 2N brakes recently and went with the sure seals. As stated earlier, they are a little tricky to get started and beveling the edges help slip them in.

I thought about the leaking fluid issue and I don't know if I resolved it in my head or not, but the axle grease is much thicker, and stickier, than the tranny fluid. So, if the old seals that caused the brakes to fail barely allowed tranny fluid to leak, then they should hold back the grease.

Hopefully by the time the brakes need replacing, it will be my son doing the work.

hi george, i did sure seals on my 47 2n. they work great so far. the sure seals can be a bit tricky to get started. might help to bevel the edge just slightly to help it get started. pack the bearings good with grease and make sure the axle doesnt have any bad scratches or grooves where the rubber on the seal rides. good luck

George, first off get ya a couple sure seals, cram as much grease as you can into those bearings & install the sure seal. Won't have to mess with the old seal at all. Parts are heavy but doable. Some times it helps to have someone to help reinstall. Good luck & play safe.

It also pays to have a extra set of seals in case you mess one up trying to install it. Real bummer when you have it all apart and doing the work and damage one in the process pounding it on. Mark H.
