It runs!

Thanks for all of the advice. My old 49 came to life after setting for 20 years. It smokes but I am planning on an overhaul of everything this fall and winter. I have a few more problems I need help help on.

I have to use starter fluid to get it going. It seems like the starter kicks out to fast when it tries to start without using the starter fluid.
The Starter will also just spin up sometimes after it has tried to start without engaging. What are the thoughts on this one.

I also need all the tires and rims replaced. I saw a guy on e-bay that has rear tires and rims for $475.00 is that good deal? Where can I get new front rims for it?

I also need a new throttle lever. Someone in the past has welded a bolt where the arm that stickes out on the throttle quadrant. I have looked on the internet and I have not found one yet.

And last thing is I had to put a new radiator on and it is to short in the hood to get the cap on. Can I shim it up at the bottom without and ill effects or is there another solution.

Thanks for the help.
Tony

Mike has given you good advise to which I can only add a little. Make sure the battery cables are 0 or 00 size, not the little skinny 12 volt type.
When you extract the starter, avoid letting it fall apart as it is difficult to get the brushes into the proper place again. And last, don't put any oil or grease on the starter shaft - it's made to run without it.

I have a 49 8N also.

N - joy.

I can highly recommend Tucker Tire (the one you saw on E-Bay). I purchased my new tires and rims through them and was very pleased. The price includes shipping East of the Rocky Mountains and they use American Freighways. I assume the radiator is a replacement for an N radiator? Then you should use some padding at the bottom but make sure it still clears everything else before you start it.
The starter might be something as simple as cleaning the shaft of gunk. Pull it out and examine it to be sure. I would also make sure that all of the connections are "clean, bright and tight" and your battery cables are not corroded under the insulation.
You can search the archives for tractor salvage yards for your throttle parts. I know they have been listed here before and you should be able to find them. I've never bookmarked them so I can't help you with links.
