My clutch engages REAL close to the top of pedal play, and disengages REAL close to bottom. I sometimes have to literally SLAM the clutch pedal down to disengage it. Adjusting hasn't helped, only seems to raise or lower the working range of the clutch. Throw-out shot? Release springs on driven plate? Don't want to end up in the drink 'cause I can't stop. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

JP

Have you checked the clutch linkage for wear or looseness? Could be the yolk that engages the throw-out bearing is loose on it's shaft. I know you didn't want to hear that but it's better to split the tractor than to go into the drink.

M-man CA, I have not split the case, but external linkage is in good shape. I appreciate the feedback, tho', and may well have to bite the bullet and break it open. No chance of checking this from outside, is there, like thru top plate or side plate (i hope i hope i hope)? Thanks!

I tried to look inside mine when the starter let go but ended up fishing the parts out blind. I wish my Master Parts Catalog weren't packed in an unlabeled box - I could see just how the fork and shaft are connected as well as call them by their proper names. I would try working the clutch by hand (engine off) and listen to see if you could tell if it is the linkage or the throw out bearing. Either way though, you have to split the tractor. If you do split it, don't forget to replace the seal in the front of the trans if it's leaking at all. Lot's in the archives about that.

Good luck,

Sounds like you've got it diagnosed properly. If you get any clutch "chatter" it is definately release springs. Otherwise throw-out.
