I hate throwing parts at problems.

I have a '48 8N that refuses to start. I've replaced the starter solenoid, rebuilt the starter, replaced the coil, and replaced the spark plugs. I'm still not getting spark at the plugs. Tommorrow I'll check the points. Other than points and plug wires, what could it be?

Hi Mag. I would bet it's the ignition switch. Visited a friend last week while turkey hunting and he couldn't get his started. Checked everything over that I could and he didn't have any spark.Turned out he had bad connections at the switch. Cleaned them and said, O.K. Norm start it up. He looked at me with a skeptical look, turned the key hit the starter button and the way it went. At least clean the connections and if that don't work, jump around it. You may just want to check to see if you have power up to the switch first. Good luck. Ron

I dont believe I have an ingition switch. I can hit the starter button at any time and it'll turn over the starter without spark. To get spark to the plugs (and cut off the tractor) I have a cable that goes directly from the hot on my battery to the screw on top of the coil. To cut off the machine I pull the cable off the battery.

Wow, here I am thinking restoring old tractors was for everybody, not just certified mechanics. And we wont even bring up all the times your tractor has broken down and you've needed help, what with you being so perfect and all.

I'm sorry if I left something out, but I have no freakin clue what I'm doing...if I did, I wouldnt have needed to ask for help. Besides, I think it's much better that I'm spending my time saving these old relics instead of going and getting stoned and then commiting violent crimes like so many other youth in my area.

I'd also like to compliment you on standing up for what you believe in, being honest and bold enough to leave your contact information. Now, if it's ok with you, I'm going to go spend the rest of my evening browsing the archives and reading my IT manual...or would you rather i left the tractor stuff to you pro's and went out, got stoned, then mugged or raped your wife or daughter?

Hey, This "kid" ain't dumb!! He is still learning and just like some of us "olders" we have to be coxed(sp) to get "the rest of the story".
He at least has an inquireing mind and is asking questions. One of these days, he wil be answering someones questions and asking for "the rest of the story"

All N-Tractors starters turn when ever you press on the starter switch. NO N-tractor starts if you don't have the ignition switch ON. (2 different switches)

As for running an unswitched ignition wire to the frontmount ignition coil direct from the battery WITHOUT going through the "infamous ballast resistor" on the backside of your dash panel, you have just BURNED OUT your frontmount ignition coil and you will never get any sparkies to start your tractor.

Replace your bad frontmount ignition coil, use the ballast resistor (get one), use a real switch for the ignition wire.

DO IT RIGHT AND BE PROUD, don't do it on the cheap because you will pay for it..... ....Dell

I would say a new wireing harness properly installed would correct most of your problems . Listen to Dell , he knows what he is talking about .

While you are checking points, go ahead and replace the condensor. Also check your rotor spring. Dam@ thing in mine had a hairline tear right next to the brass so it didn't make good contact with the distributor and couldn't carry the needed elec. Counfounded me for a long time before I found the problem.

This is a typical "bad ignition switch" problem and is eazy to check. Use a jumper wire with clippies across your ignition switch wire terminals..... ..Dell

I'll agree with Dell this was my first breakdown (1 of 3 in as many months of ownership) and I was using the tractor at the time. Actually it's one of the first things stated to check in the owners manual. Just gotta love the o girl though. I think my wife is getting jealous.

assuming adequate clean, fresh fuel supply:

Battery cables
poor wiring connections
timing coil connection
condensor

My 8N(sidemount)wouldn't start one time and I went ballistic. Then I found that dirt daubers had filled the coil center connection with mud while I had the coil wire for a couple of days. Ya just never know what little stupid stuff you'll find.

Ignition switch. Make sure rotor is turning. If distributor shaft is not turning the points are not opening and closing. Check all the wires. Make sure they are not broke. Make sure all connections are "clean, bright and tight."

Eh, what would my ignition switch have to do with anything? The starter works, and turns the engine over...I just dont have spark. I've never put it under any real load, other than moving a Farmall A that was torn down to just the castings and wheels. I parked it, cut it off, and it aint started since. Would that have bent my distributor shaft?

Your ignition switch sends current to your ignition system. Also check for loose or dirty connections. I went thru that myself this past weekend. Check for sloppy dist shaft. Points opening and closing. Could be many things. Doesn't take long or cost much to do these things. HTH
