I just recently found this forum and have found it to be very informative, so hopefully someone can help me out. My dad has a '52 8N and just recently there has been a sqeaking/slight grinding noise coming from the left rear tire. We can also hear play in the wheel when we rock the tractor back and forth. Upon investigating we found that the large axle nut was loose enough to be turned by hand. When we tried to tighten it, it would get to a point where it wouldn't tighten anymore like the threads were stripped. what are the odds that the axle threads would strip? What else should be checked to try and pinpoint what would be wrong. Thanks.

Just fixed my Jubilee with the same problem. Yes, the hub is worn causing the wheel to have play. Ford sells shims which install between the axel housing and the brake back plate which will remedy the problem. Problem is, they are pretty expensive and very thin, thus, you need several of them to do any good. Good luck

Most likely the squeak is the hub rubbing on the brake spring. This is due to the hub and axle being worn so much that the hub is being pushed too far on the shaft. Had the same thing happen to our tractor. When you take the drum off, you should see shiny surfaces on the springs were it has been rubbing, or see it rubbing when you rotate the hub. You will need to replace the axle, hub, or both to fix it.

Jason, special nuts to repair stripped threads are available. Check with the vendors that advertise here. A loose hub, what you have, will squeak. If run loose very long the hub and the axle will require replacement.

My guess is some one put a set of ; sure seals; in there and the rear wheel bearings are no longer self lubricating ( You got to take the wheel off and grease it ) As far as that big nut being stripped, they sell a larger self taping one that works great so you dont half to buy a new 150 dollar axel .( been there , done that ) When you tighten it back down it takes 450 lbs of torque ( 4 dead midgets and a skinny kid )

Thanks for the suggestions. My dad went to the local ford dealer and bought one of those self tapping nuts for the axle. That seems to have fixed the problems that were occurring. When he gets time he's going to check the hub out but in the mean time this appears to be a fix for it.

Thanks for the help.
