I just bought a new finishing mower. It weights about 600lbs. After the first mowing I lifted it up to wash it off. My 8N would barely lift it but it finally did. I got it out yesterday and tried to lift it and it would only come about 12 inches off the ground. Any ideas on whats wrong? What causes a lift to be so weak. A "O" ring in the pump or the piston seal or? I have never had a hydraulic system on a 8N apart and dread the thought. Thanks.

I bought a 2n with a similar problem, after trying all the usual checks, I found the problem to be a cracked pump housing. I replaced the pump $$$$$ and the tractor works like NEW. But try the simple stuff first. By the way, THANKS GUYS!Your advice was right on...

First start with the easy stuff: correct hyd fluid oil level and look to see if your hyd fluid has any water in it. There is a 6" inspection cover on the left you can pull off to check.

While there, take off the mower, start tractor, engage PTO ad have someone operate the control lever. Keep yer fingers out of there! If you see hyd fluid spraying from the pump or the ram cylinders, then yes O rings and/or scored cylinders. The relief valve may also be a/the culprit and if you don't see spraying fluid spend $6 and replace this valve to see if that fixes the problem.

I suspect that you may be in for a hyd overhaul. Did mine about 2 months ago and it takes about 1 - 2 very long days, but is not very complicated. The Ford I&T 04 mnual is a must and I also recommend the hyd rebuild video available from this site and others. Parts are cheap and lots of people carry them. You'll find lots of crud down there and believe me, clean it all out before you disassemble the hyd system so you can have a good loook at how things are put together. This is where the manual and video fall short. No substitute for seeing things "real time."

Do not lose hope, hyd. problems are usually fairly easy to fix. Remember, these tractors were engineered as simply as possible, and nearly everything can be fixed by someone with a little mechanical ability. I dreaded the thought of pulling my pump too until I had to do it, found out it wasn't that big a deal, just messy. Read up on hydraulic problems at the Smith's 8N site, very helpful for diagnosis. Read up on your FO-4 manual, post more info here. These guys are great helpers.

Could it be a bad relief valve?
