You say you just bought the tractor, you do reliase that you start in the gear that you want to you use? Tractors were not meant to shift 1st 2nd and 3rd , so where the gears are is of no worry. Just a thought , maybe you didn't realise that. Stan

That is the standard 2N pattern. It is not like an auto pattern. I find you use a lot of 2 - R shifting and it makes sense. 1 - 2 is tough but rarely used. Ran down the road last weekend and 2 - 3 isn't bad. Better get used to it, at least the numbers are cast in the housing and don't wear off the shifter. :^)

...you're used to an 8n which is left up for reverse, middle up for 4th, right up 1st, left down 2nd, right down 3rd.

He said it is a three speed but the shift pattern is different. To me this implies the comparison between the shift pattern on his 2N and another three speed transmission shifting patern, and as we know, the 8N has a four speed transmission.

I really should be working....

... another possibility based upon the information given. People have even written this board asking where some of the gears are on their 8's due to corrosion/dirt on the shift plate conceiling the cast numbers.

Me too on the working thing. Is it Friday yet?

I remember a message posted here a while back where an attached photo showed the dashboard on a powermaster he had just bought. On the dashboard was an odd part number which he asked for assistance identifying. The handwritten part number was....

R1342

Someone had written down the shifting patern on the dashboard.

Ed, I remember that post too, and it was just too funny. The guy had actually just gotten a Jubilee and took a picture of the dash in the dark with some "strange" painted numbers and letters. R 4 1 2 3

One guy wrote back saying "all for one, two, three" and then a comment about it being the shift pattern for a near blind or forgetful owner. Unfortunately the picture link has been lost.

I'm with ED. That describes my 46 2N also. Just curious, why do you think that shift pattern is deviant.

I don't know what is strange about that. My 2N's shift pattern is what you describe.

2 - 3

R - 1

It makes snow plowing easy because 2nd and reverse are similar speeds and shuttling between them is quick.
