I have replaced all of the electical parts in this tractor. This includes- wiring harness, plugs, plug wires, coil, points, condensor, rotor, dist. cap, voltage regulator, and resistor. The thing will not spark. I have chech everything I could think of with a meter and no luck. I am at a dead end. What do you all think my next step should be here?

Thanks

Did you check to see if the rotor is indeed spinning inside the distributor when you crank 'er?

Had your tractor been running in the past- or did you buy it not running?

Amusing note: My Ferguson quit in the field yesterday- went to fix it this morning.....no spark! I said to myself "here we go.....driving 38 miles round trip to town, to buy condensers and coils, etc". But, luckily, I checked the obvious little "stupid" things first.....and what was it? A busted wire! Had 'er going in two minutes!

Hi Tony. Last week I met an old friend at his camp and he couldn't get his N tractor started and was he frustrated. It was not getting spark. I did a quick check with what I had on hand, which I don't carry much when I'm hunting turkey's, but a shotgun. He had power to the off/on switch, but nothing coming out. Cleaned and tightened up the terminals and foolishly comfident, said go ahead and start it and it started right up.I was pleasantly surprised and he was happy and thought I was a miricle mechanic, which I'm not. Try it. Ron

I can't solve it from what you post but I can help you solve it. What does the voltage read at the top of the coil and does that voltage change with cranking with the key on?

Not unknown for coils and condensors to come bad out of the box. A switch, a coil spring lead, points slipped, lots of possiblities. If you start in the middle and work one way or the other you cut the suspects in half.

Your mileage may vary

I had the same exact senerio. The pigtail on the bottom of the coil as Jerry Mentioned was my culprit. It is very touchy and if you dont have ggod contact you will have no spark. I had to stretch the pigtail out to get contact. Pulled a lot of hair out over it.

These old ns are positive ground at the battery , but you already know that . What was your problem to start with before you replaced all this stuff ? ( Im no pro , just trying to help ) It will not spark where ? Sounds like you did to much at once .I suspect. improper wiring of harness and or voltage reg . I hope others with more knowledge will set us both straight, good luck .

Back last year I went through a similar experience with my 49. This is just a thought but my problem was that the pig tail on the coil was not making contact. I had taken it off and not got it back on just right. Not very likely, but it happened to me.

The awitch is a very good possibility.

The next thing I would check is the key switch because the tractor will still turn over if the key is off but won't have spark.

Thanks guys just a follow up. I redid everything because it was all shot. The tractor had been setting for about 10 years before I got it and everything was in bad shape. I was wondering whether the pigtail on the coil was making contact or not. I will give it a try and lenghten it a little and see what happens.

Thanks

Try jumpering around the ignition switch and see if you get spark . All battery conections should be clean and free of corrosion, what about that ballost resister on the back side of the dash ?
