'N'other oil question

I currently use 10W40 motor oil in my 2N. After running her for a while and parking, she drips oil from the front of the engine, probably around the crankshaft. When cool she does not drip.

Now, I know that one day I will need to re-build the engine and replace the gaskets and seals which hopefully would eliminate the drips, but until that day, would using straight 40 weight reduce the amount of leakage when warm?

Ed, check your distributor gasket. After a full overhaul mine was leaking and I was cussing the mechanic because it had not leaked before. Removed the dist. one morning suspecting condensation was giving me a starting problem. After replacing the distributor using a new gasket, no more leak.

ED-

Straight 40wt will help some, and as Salmoneye likes to remind us, oil's cheap.

Yea, but not as cheap as it used to be.

Ed,
I'm no oil expert, but I plan to replace my oil with non-detergent to avoid your problem. I imagine that if you change it often enough that dirt shouldn't be a problem, but using the detergent stuff will loosen the crud and cause leaks. I can't say if switching back will plug the leaks.
My 2 cents. HTH

I never heard of something so crazy. NEVER switch back to a non-detergent oil. Nobody has recomended that since the 20's. Detergent is the only way to go.

At this point I will try anything, but I guess there is no simple answer to this problem.

Ed,

I doubt it if your front rope seal is worn out replace it. About 3hr job. 10W 40 is still 40wt oil it just has a lower viscosity at startup. Do your own test. take a cup of 10w40 and straight 40wt. stick it in the freezer for a few hours. see which one pours out easier. Do the same at 200 degrees on the stove. Dont let your wife catch ya.

my 2cents

10W-40 is not as thick as 40wt. It only has the same lubricating properties as 40wt at operating temperature.

I agree with Luke. Over the years of working on motors, I have tried to stop leaks with different weight oils, additives which "bring back" the seal, etc. etc. etc. It never works. Also, detergent oil is the way to go to prevent any more sludge build up, but straight 40 wt. isn't the right viscosity when the weather turns cool. You are lucky in that it's the front seal and pretty easily repaired (compared to the rear seal). And that's..... my $.02

three hours, huh?

I imagine I would have to remove the hood, radiator, front axle, transmission, and drop the oil pan, eh?

but while all that is apart, I might as well look into doing a full rebuild on the motor.

what is worse than the prospect of having to do all that work, is the idea that I would look forward to it!

Thanks Luke.
