I finally got around to installing the LIVE THANG live hydraulics on the second 8N that I have restored partially in the past couple of months.

The hydraulic pump was in pretty sad shape in this tractor. It's a 52 model and the engine was in excellent condition once I got it up and running so I could tell. The lift would hold a load good and the adjustment was pretty close to right so I didn't have to go into the lift cover. Only thing was it took forever to come up and was doing the trembling and knocking thing when it did.

You would not believe the difference in how well the lift works now. It will come up from the bottom to the top in about two seconds. It will speed any job you are doing that requires the lift to be used a lot. Especially when coming to the end of a row of plowing etc when you want to raise the implement. Just push in the clutch and raise the implement with the tractor still in gear and then when the lift is up just let out on the clutch and be on your way.

If anybody is interested in learing more about the live hydraulics just look at my web site in the link below.

I too am still saving my pennies for a Live Thang for my 8N. I want one, and plan to have one, just as soon as I get the bucks saved up.

Hey Zane - I thought of you this past weekend.

I got my copy of Antique Power, with an article about a restored cub cadet 12 hp tractor. This one was special because it had the optional hydraulic mower deck lift. The extra large pump (seems like there would be no room for your leg) is located on the right side of the tractor with the control lever on top. The pump is belt driven off of the transmission side of the engine - talk about a hard belt to change. The lift cylinder is located right below the pump.

I remeber my dad's cub cadet and how much effort it took to lift it. I guess some might have needed the extra help.

PS, I am still stashing away nickels and dimes for my live thang. I will have one, oh yes...I will have one.

Hey Zane, What causes the knocking? My 8N does this when it lifts real heavy implements and it is getting worse over time. I figured the pump may need attention. I am hoping to get through the summer and then address several issues this winter. I am also really attracted to a live thang. :-) I plan to ask you some specific questions about your product in the near future.

The knocking is from wear in the brass blocks and the piston yokes that ride on them. This pump was an still is a work or art. It is the most effecient pump and also the simplest pump that I have ever seen and I have a lot of experiance in various industrial and agricultural hydraulic systems. Harry Ferguson was truly a genius! IH has still trying to use an exhaust cylinder for a lift when Harry was using the modern hydraulics. Most other tractors didn't have hydraulics or exhaust lifts. Just muscle and spring power.
