I need to replace grease seals on the rear axles of my Jubilee. I got the brake drums off (had to heat the flat head screws a little), got the big hex nut and flat washer off each axle, but can't get the hubs to move. I have a large 3 jaw puller, drawn up real tight, and hitting the end of the center screw; nothing moving. Did I miss something? Is there anything else holding that hub on the axle? Should I put heat on the hub? Any other trick you can offer? I sure don't want to break anything. Thanks for the help!

Put the drum back on the axle and tighten the screws. Give the back edge of the drum some "love taps" with a hand sledge (wear ear plugs).
OR put the drum on backwards and give it some wholops around it. (again, ear plugs)

Just a thought but push or pull or both on the edge of the tire or wheel may do more than pulling on the center. You get a bit of leverage out there on the edge.

Bill, Put the axle nut on and leave it a couple turns loose. Drive the Jub. over some rough ditches till the hub comes loose from the axle. Keep an eye on the nut so it does not come off.

raytasch,

That is a great idea! It would seem like that rascal would just have to come loose eventually. I did get one side off since my original post. That convinced me that I understood how it went together and nothing else was holding it on the axle. The tractor is up on stands and torn apart; plus it is raining like crazy outside so I hope not to have to resort to the driving solution. Still wondering about using a little heat? Or maybe I need a puller built a little stonger than the one I have. I appreciate you trying to help, Bill

ya gotta take all those bolts out that hold the backing plates and axle retainers to the trumpet. It should slide right out.

bg,

I am guessing that you are thinking about Fords a little newer than the Jubilee, the ones where the wheel hub is welded to the end of the axle and you have to pull the axle to replace seals. On the Jubilee the axles are splined on the outer ends and the hubs, with matching splines, goes on the end of the axle and is held on with a huge hex nut. Thanks for trying, I really do appreciate it. Bill

Here's something YOU might try, Put the puller on as tight as you can and leave it there and go do something else... The constant pull may make it give up.

I took the center hub off my Brush hog, the part that the blades attach too.. Nothing I did made it come off.. I tried the big hammer in the center of the puller like you did. But when it came down to it. I put the puller on it ( with some WD-40 ) And left it. I was over doing something else and I heard a big noise, and the puller fell off.

It worked for me
Good Luck
J52J/Jess

Ps: When I changed my seals, My hubs pretty much fell off. I had to replace one axel and Hub because of a loose Nut.

Hey Jess,

Great minds think alike. I just came in from the shop for the night. I soaked it with BP Blaster and left the puller on the hub, nice and tight. Maybe it will be laying on the floor in the morning.

Tomorrow night, if it is still not moving, I plan to put a little heat on it.

Thanks for trying to help,
Bill
