On a 53 Jubilee that a friend of mind is restoring, the rotor wobbles when it turns thus making the cover shake. He wants to take the distributor off to check it out and it does not seen to want to come loose.

First any ideas as to what is making it wobble?

Second, how do you remove the distributor with out messing up anything?

Thanks for your advice!

Scott

On my Jubilee, the distributor body is aluminum, the block is cast iron, and after 50 years, the 2 parts had some corrosion (galvanic corrosion, specifically) and it needed some 'coaxing' to come out. Lot's of penetrating oil, gentile (VERY gentile!) taps, and patience. Just when I was about to give up, off she came. You gotta rotate it as it comes up, 'cuz it has a helical gear that mates with the gear on the cam shaft. I forget which way to rotate it.

It wobbles because either the bushing is worn out, the shaft is bent or both. Mark the position of the rotor, remove the hold-down clamp, and twist and pull the distributor out. The shaft will turn as the distributor body comes out. The bushing can be replaced. Check the shaft and advance mechanism for wear. If the slotted plate is worn and/or the pins on the bottoms of the weights are worn, replace the shaft and the weights. It requires removing the drive gear that is riveted onto the shaft. Then you have to accurately drill the new shaft to accept the rivet or roll pin you use to secure the drive gear.
